Tween and even some teen readers grab on to manga, graphic novels, and novels in verse in part because these literary forms feel accessible. Emerging readers don't have the same confidence adult readers do.

1st novel writing class I took @kerrymadden recommended the Synonym Finder. Writers often tell me they are dazzled by the verbs I employ. I don't have a secret stash, but I do have this book.

When I was a bookseller, I hosted #BrianSelznick. Hundreds of students from 4 schools came. It was a lot of work, but Brian was kind and generous. He even sent me a handwritten thank you. More guest authors should show their appreciation the way he did.
