The enduring partnership between @MFASerbia Diplomatic Academy and @DA_vienna is a model of international academic cooperation in diplomacy. That is why I was especially pleased to address the students and professors of this prestigious #Austrian institution and talk about #Serbia’s priorities in international relations, our #European journey, regional cooperation as the backbone of our foreign policy, economic growth, infrastructural and technological achievements, our diplomatic struggle for preserving our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the significance of #KosovoandMetohija as the cradle of #Serbian identity, culture and spirituality.

I spoke to Serbia’s Foreign Minister @markodjuric yesterday on the phone about my meeting with members of Serbia’s civil society. Active engagement of civil Society is a valuable part of democracy. The aim was to once more state that the Future of Serbia lies in the EU and Austria will continue to support Serbia on this path. This was not meant to be an internal interference but about European values and fundamentals. As I already stressed during my very good and constructive talks in Serbia this week, EU membership includes a strong commitment to the principles and values of the European Union, including rule of law, democracy and freedom of speech. I assured FM Djuric that the Serbian people can continue to count on Austria as a friend and supporter on their way towards full EU membership.

We are very concerned by the disruptions of parliamentary work and the violence in the Serbian parliament. The parliament must be the place for democratic debate in the interest of all citizens, and must fully play its role. Recent developments in Serbia targeting civil society organisations are very worrying. We have been consistently calling for de-escalation of tensions, by establishing conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, including political actors, institutions and members of civil society to address reforms necessary for Serbia’s EU future.

Interesting discussion with @CRTArs and @KOMSmladi on the importance of civil society participation and challenges in ensuring good governance and in developing and implementing legislation and policies that reflect people’s needs and are accepted by those concerned.

We condemn the attack on the Ibar-Lepenac canal. The canal is essential for the water supply and for the operation of Kosovo’s biggest power plant. This attack needs to be investigated swiftly and those responsible brought to justice.
