Karl Popper’s, ‘Open Society and Its Enemies’ remains one of the most compelling defences of open discourse as a civilisational mechanism of error correction. For Popper, Truth is never possessed in its entirety. It can only be understood through a logical process of criticism, disagreement, and the continual testing of ideas. A society that is capable of correcting its mistakes entirely depends upon the freedom to question prevailing assumptions and to expose falsehood through reasoned debate. It is therefore entirely regrettable that one of the more insidious realities of our age is that certain individuals and institutions invoke the language of the open society while inverting its essential principles. Under the banner of tolerance, safety, equity or consensus, group-think, they have deliberately narrowed the range of permissible inquiry and badly damaged the very processes through which truth is discovered. Popper understood that certainty is the enemy of progress. Indeed, a civilisation that loses its capacity for honest discourse loses its principal means of self-correction. Once criticism is treated as heresy and dissent as a threat rather than a necessity, the foundations of the open society begin to crumble from within. beg you to read Popper. To read @DavidDeutschOxf. To listen to and absorb the work of @ToKTeacher @naval @ConjectureInst and the many other great critical rationalists. We ought to understand the great peril we face.

I've been telling people for 25 years that Jane Street is not interested in formal methods. No more! And we're actively hiring to form a new formal methods team!

When statistically impossible things happen, we should not be expected as a society to accept them. Evidence of fraud isn’t limited to video surveillance. Statistical impossibilities are hard evidence of fraud.

Starting to get a tad bit concerned about just how much of this show ends up coming true.

JD Vance just ended his presidential exploratory election committee. Now, his mentor, Peter Thiel, has fled the U.S., for right wing Argentina. But not before declaring that he might have overstated AI’s impact on society, particularly on employment. Something bad is happening.

Thanks Mehtaab! Some additional commentary: The idea that sum-product might be false for algebraic numbers of high degree has been floating around for a while, but of course it's hard to know exactly what others had tried.
A remarkable paper appeared on arXiv tonight by Thomas Bloom, Will Sawin, Carl Schildkraut and Dmitrii Zhelezov. In this paper, they prove that there exists c>0 and arbitrarily large finite sets A of real numbers such that max(|A A|,|AA|)≀|A|^{2-c}. This disproves the well-known sum-product conjecture over the real numbers. The sum-product conjecture considers the two most basic operations: addition and multiplication. A A is the set of all pairwise sums of two elements in A while AA is the set of all pairwise products of two elements in A. (1/5)

These thoughts on nihilism really struck a chord for me. Here we have an esteemed French philosopher explaining how deconstruction has the fatal flaw: it offers nothing of value to replace that which was deconstructed. The amazing part is that this is exactly what my father explained about his life philosophy which was heavily influenced by hippies and French nihilism. Literally the same conclusion. It surprises me because I did not expect people of wildly different educational experiences to realize the same summary fatal flaw.

DĂšs qu'on refait. DĂšs qu'on transmet. DĂšs qu'on crĂ©e.
Alors pardon. Et au travail.

In this letter, the CEO of Coinbase talks about non-technical teams shipping production code. Honestly, I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about. Using AI agents makes it possible for teams who are not deeply technical in the syntax of a language to ship production code. But that team had better be very deeply technical in managing the structure and quality of the code that is produced. What the agents give us is the ability to disengage from deep syntax. But they do not give us the ability to disengage from modular design and architecture. You still need to be deeply technical in those topics in order to produce good production quality code.
This is an email I sent earlier today to all employees at Coinbase: Team, Today I’ve made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%. I want to walk you through why we're doing this now, what it means for those affected, and how this positions us for the future. Why now Two forces are converging at the same time. We need to be front footed to respond to both. First, the market. Coinbase is well-capitalized, has diversified revenue streams, and is well-positioned to weather any storm. Crypto is also on the verge of the next wave of adoption, with stablecoins, prediction markets, tokenization, and more taking off. However, our business is still volatile from quarter to quarter. While we've managed through that cyclicality many times before and come out stronger on the other side, we’re currently in a down market and need to adjust our cost structure now so that we emerge from this period leaner, faster, and more efficient for our next phase of growth. Second, AI is changing how we work. Over the past year, I’ve watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks. Non-technical teams are now shipping production code and many of our workflows are being automated. The pace of what's possible with a small, focused team has changed dramatically, and it's accelerating every day. All of this has led us to an inflection point, not just for Coinbase, but for every company. The biggest risk now is not taking action. We are adjusting early and deliberately to rebuild Coinbase to be lean, fast, and AI-native. We need to return to the speed and focus of our startup founding, with AI at our core. What this means To get there, we are not just reducing headcount and cutting costs, we’re fundamentally changing how we operate: rebuilding Coinbase as an intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it. What does this mean in practice? - Fewer layers, faster decisions: We are flattening our org structure to 5 layers max below CEO/COO. Layers slow things down and create coordination tax. The future is small, high context teams that can move quickly. Leaders will own much more, with as many as 15 direct reports. Fewer layers also means a leaner cost structure that is built to perform through all market cycles. - No pure managers: Every leader at Coinbase must also be a strong and active individual contributor. Managers should be like player-coaches, getting their hands dirty alongside their teams. - AI-native pods: We’ll be concentrating around AI-native talent who can manage fleets of agents to drive outsized impact. We’ll also be experimenting with reduced pod sizes, including “one person teams” with engineers, designers, and product managers all in one role. In short: AI is bringing a profound shift in how companies operate, and we’re reshaping Coinbase to lead in this new era. This is a new way of working, and we need to leverage AI across every facet of our jobs. To those who are affected I know there are real people behind these decisions — talented colleagues who have poured themselves into this company and our mission. To those of you who will be leaving: thank you. You’ve helped build Coinbase into what it is today, and I am sincerely grateful for everything you've done. All impacted team members will receive an email to their personal account in the next hour with more information, and an invitation to meet with an HRBP and a senior leader in your organization. Coinbase system access has been removed today. I know this feels sudden and harsh, but it is the only responsible choice given our duty to protect customer information. To those affected, we will be providing a comprehensive package to support you through this transition. US employees will receive a minimum of 16 weeks base pay (plus 2 weeks per year worked), their next equity vest, and 6 months of COBRA. Employees on a work visa will get extra transition support. Those outside of the US will receive similar support, based on local factors and subject to any consultation requirements. Coinbase prides itself on talent density. Our employees are among the most talented people in the world, and I have no doubt that your skills and experience will be highly sought after as you pursue your next chapters. How we move forward To the team that is staying, I know this is a difficult day. We’re saying goodbye to colleagues and friends you've been in the trenches with. But here’s what I want you to know as we move forward together: Over the past 13 years, we have weathered four crypto winters, gone public, and built the most trusted platform in our industry. We’ve made it this far by making hard decisions and by always staying focused on our mission. This time will be no different – nothing has changed about the long term outlook of our company or industry. And most importantly, our mission has never been more important for the world. Increasing economic freedom requires a new financial system, and we’re building it. The Coinbase that emerges from this will be more capable than ever to achieve our mission. Brian

A Lens That Takes Derivatives US Patent Basis: US8610839B2 - Optical Processing System for Computing Derivatives. In a 4f Optical Processor, the first lens takes the incoming field and forms its Fourier spectrum. At that middle plane, a tiny optical mask multiplies the spectrum by iΟ. This is the derivative operator written in Fourier language u(x) -> U(Ο) -> iΟU(Ο) -> ∂u/∂x Then the second lens brings the field back to the real space. What comes out is no longer just a focused beam. It is the spatial derivative of the input field, computed by light as it propagates. So, this is the serious promise of optical computing. A physical optical train can perform operations that usually live inside numerical code: differentiation, filtering, convolution, edge detection, correlation, and many other linear transforms.

A 50-year-old mother was protesting the district's policy allowing students to use locker rooms based on gender identity. Stripped down to a bathing suit at a California School Board meeting, asking officials: "If you are disrupted by a 50-year-old woman in a bathing suit, then you have just proven my point about the vulnerability you are forcing on our children..." WHAT ABOUT THAT? She brilliantly cornered the board. The swift recess proves their hypocrisy, they cannot stomach the sight of a 50-year-old woman in a swimsuit, but they will mandate that teenage girls change next to biological boys.
