**No, Australia was more violent in the late 80s/early 90s than now (2020-2026) for serious crime.**
Homicide rates were ~1.8–2.1 per 100,000 in the early 1990s. They’ve fallen over 50% since, to ~0.8–1.0 recently (AIC/ABS data).
Robbery also declined sharply. Recorded assaults rose, but this is largely due to better reporting of domestic violence. Self-reported victim surveys show stable or lower physical violence experiences today.
Serious violence is clearly lower now.
