We published a must-read story by @_KarenHao at @TheAtlantic today on the resources demanded by just one datacenter in Goodyear, Arizona—millions upon millions of gallons of water every year to support AI. theatlantic.com/technology/a…

Python tip: setdefault() is a dictionary method that either returns a value of the key or inserts a key with the default value into a dictionary. If the default value is not set, the value is None.

digital art history - on march 23, 2021 social codes on @FeralFile was released, curated by @REAS and featuring @dmitricherniak @manoloidee @carreras_anna @liasomething @pixlpa @mayaonthenet @RavenKwok @wblut @sasj_nl @beesandbombs this show fundamentally changed the way i perceive algorithmic art and how i experience it on the browser. i remember waiting till the clock hit the hour to hurriedly purchase a full set. each work was $75 and a full set was $750. those who were there at the time know what this felt like given the generative art boom that unfolded shortly thereafter. i have spent hours watching each piece from this show full screen on my laptop. "social codes is an exhibition of software art, also called generative art. all of the work is comprised of code written by artists to create visual experiences. some works in the exhibition relate to the visual histories of drawing, painting, animation, and video, but all of it is native digital art, in that each artwork is a performance of code choreographed by the artist." - @REAS this will forever go down in my own personal history with digital art.

Some additional perspective. We will continue to use Processing in several of our classes as we have been, and we're all comforted knowing that the platform and community will continue to thrive and be available for all our students!

Earlier this week, Ben Fry wrote a personal thread about his views on Processing and the Processing Foundation, saying that he left the Foundation because he disagreed with its direction. I’m clarifying that I’m aligned with the Processing Foundation, my vision of Processing and the Processing Foundation are the same.

before there was processing, there was design by numbers by @johnmaeda -- a small, playful environment for learning the language of creating coding. I asked my @medialab student @LingdongH to take a look at it for inspiration and... (🧵)

We're a little late on sharing this, but this is some big news in the Processing world – a platform well-used through our curriculum. We wish everyone involved the best and hope this community will only continue to thrive!

I have made the extremely difficult decision to resign from the Processing Foundation. I am absolutely heartbroken, and have not slept well for months.
