PSA! The urgency of climate change is obvious but forgoing planning & deliberation won't make govt action much faster. In @naturesustainab, we (w/ K. Murenbeeld & @MwilliamsonMatt) debunk the myth that enviro impact assessments are the main source of slow public lands decisions🧵

It's hard to celebrate anything these days, but I've been waiting for this one for too long. Jim Adams, Sam Merrill and I are happy to present our issue salience simulations model. With @BESResearch data we show how much issue salience matters in elections doi.org/10.1111/1475-6765.12…

Now with issue number: my article with @VirOliveros and Rebecca Weitz-Shapiro on credit claiming by labeling can be found in the latest @cps_journal -- see the thread below for a summary! Credit claiming is surprisingly under-researched; we hope to see others build on our work!
New in @cps_journal: When politicians engage in credit claiming by putting their name on the product of a government program, how do voters react...? @VirOliveros, Rebecca Weitz-Shapiro, and I were inspired by the 2020 U.S. stimulus checks to dig into this question. (1/n)

Did you know local govts in nearly half of US states can no longer control which energy fuels are used in new construction? We analyze how interest groups framed this preemption debate in state committee hearings & consider implications for strategic policy advocacy @PSJ_editor🧵

Minor but important detail: We didn't find any evidence of renewable energy industry representatives on either side of the debate. I have my guesses but want to know more about their thinking & engagement in these policy conflicts. 5/6

There's no question that bans on energy fuels & bans on bans on energy fuels are shaping climate/energy policy in the US federal system. Check out the other findings -- open access w/ talented MPA student Cary Ritzler. A fun project! 6/6 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Writing comments today on a Forest Service 'Dixie Fire Recovery' project. Did you know management of the Lassen National Forest is guided by a Forest Plan which was scoped in 1979, and hasn't been materially updated since 1993?

Its become an article of faith among some in the US that reforming environmental impact analyses (e.g. NEPA) is necessary to insure a just transition, but much of this conversation is anecdotal. There hasn't been much evidence about how much NEPA matters... until now

NEPA/EIA reform to support just, clean energy & climate adaptation is necessary but quick fixes like exemptions, page limits, & curbing public participation is unlikely to speed up implementation in the @forestservice & other agencies, as some claim. 2/3

We made it: I have joined the @uwevansschool and relocated to Seattle! I had a great three years at UGA and in Athens and am eager to maintain collaborations and friendships there. I'm also stoked to continue participating in the higher ed network with so many good, fun folks.

Our two young kids are the center of our choices, artfully inspiring and disrupting our work lives. Joy in change and adaptation is a theme we often discuss as a family. We practiced it this year and are grateful for the (sometimes really) long days we had together in transition.
