This is what they fear most: people putting old divisions aside and standing together. While some continue to dig into the past in an attempt to reignite sectarian tensions and keep communities divided, more and more people are choosing to focus on the challenges of the present and the future. Catholics and Protestants have far more in common than what separates them. Across Northern Ireland people are beginning to see through the politics of division and are finding common ground on the issues that affect their families, communities and way of life. Unity does not mean forgetting the past. It means refusing to let it be used against us. A people united is far stronger than a people divided.

When our political-media establishment chant "stand with Ukraine", it means boycotting diplomacy and finance the kidnapping of Ukrainian men to use them in a campaign to weaken Russia as a strategic rival. If the majority of Ukrainians had a say, there would not have been a regime change in 2014, the 2015 Minsk agreement would have been implemented, the 2019 peace platform would not have been reversed, the 2022 Istanbul agreement would have been signed, and there would now be negotiations about the pan-European security architecture. However, the US and EU run Ukraine, and men are hunted on the streets to fight to the last Ukrainian in NATO's proxy war.

If we are going to challenge the horrific scenes we have witnessed in recent days then we need politicians who are at least consistent.

Not one liberal politician or journalist argued that the George Floyd "I can't breathe" clip shouldn't have been shared. They only want to stop you seeing the Belfast clip because it's massively, massively inconvenient to them - 'sensitivity for victims' has zilch to do with it.

As a priest, what troubles me most about this story is not simply the crime itself, but the willingness of so many adults to dismiss the testimony of a frightened child before the facts were known. Scripture repeatedly commands us to defend the vulnerable, protect the innocent, and judge with righteous judgement. If a child says they are afraid, our first instinct should be concern, not ridicule. If allegations are made, they should be investigated carefully and truthfully. If those allegations are proven true, then justice should follow without fear or favour. What we must not do is allow ideology to blind us to reality. Christians are commanded to love the stranger, but we are also commanded to protect the innocent. These are not opposing duties. A society loses its moral compass when it begins defending political narratives more passionately than it defends vulnerable children. If individuals publicly accused this young girl of lying, mocked her, or exposed her to further abuse, and the facts have now shown she was telling the truth, then simple human decency demands an apology. Truth matters. Justice matters. Children matter. And when we get it wrong, repentance matters too.
