Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is not exclusively a childhood condition. As this collection of photos of our staff and supporters show, whether you’re 4, 29 or 51 - you can develop at any age. 📸 How about you? Let us know below when you were diagnosed. 👇 T1D is a relentless and misunderstood condition, often managed in silence. As we close out Diabetes Awareness Week, let’s keep busting harmful myths and keep the conversation about type 1 diabetes going. 💙 #DiabetesAwarenessWeek2026 #DiabetesAwareness #GBDoc

Who said sugar was off the table with type 1 diabetes (T1D)? 👀 Here at Breakthrough T1D HQ, our colleagues living with T1D helped replace myths with facts by sharing their go-to sweet treats – because there’s no such thing as ‘forbidden’ foods if you have type 1. It’s not about what you eat, but how much insulin you take. In fact, some sugary snacks are essential for raising low glucose levels. Your turn! Tell us your favourite sweet treats below and share this post to help replace T1D myths with facts. 💙 #diabetesawarenessweek2026 #diabetesawareness #GBDoc

Our MythBuster engine is here to tackle one of the biggest T1D myths: what people think ‘causes’ the condition. 🔍 T1D isn’t caused by anything a person did or didn’t do – it’s an autoimmune condition, and there’s nothing one can do to prevent it. This Diabetes Awareness Week, let's debunk these harmful myths. Share this post with your friends and wider network to remind others that no one chooses to have T1D. 💙 #diabetesawareness #diabetesawarenessweek #GBDoc

On the way home from a really impactful #UKPCEDD26 (UK Professional Conference on Eating Disorders and Diabetes) at the beautiful University of Warwick. Today explored the overlap between #diabetes, eating, mental health and everyday life - covering everything from early intervention and psychological therapies, through to research, technology and beyond. Importantly, it was grounded in #LivedExperience from the very start 💙 The depth of expertise in the room was inspiring, but what also really stood out was the openness, curiosity and willingness to ask difficult questions in such a supportive environment. Huge thanks to the speakers, organising committee and everyone who shared their insight and experiences so openly. Such an important topic. Really proud to be there alongside the brilliant Breakthrough T1D UK team - and great to see so many familiar faces 💙 (And thank you Simon and Sarah for making the return 🚆 journey fly by!) #Type1Diabetes #T1D @BT1DUK #GBDoc #NIDoc

Meet Safwan, one of our incredible Youth Ambassadors. Living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) himself, Safwan is passionate about supporting others in the T1D community. He recently volunteered at our Information Hub, where he shared his own experience to support other young people and families. And he inspired our crowds and kept them going as Lead Walker at last month’s One Walk Manchester! 💪 “My younger sister also has T1D and through this organisation I am able to volunteer at events alongside other young adults and support the T1D family.” - Safwan This Volunteers' Week, we’re celebrating people like Safwan. ✨ Feeling inspired? We’re thrilled to share that the Steve Morgan Foundation has donated £280,000 to expand Coping with Diabetes, the psychological and wellbeing support tool for children and young people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). 💙 Co-created with @DigiBeteUK, the free to access tool brings together films, animations and interactive activities to help young people understand and manage the emotional impact of the condition. Research shows that young people living with T1D have a higher chance of developing mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression and diabetes distress. Thanks to this incredible investment, we can reach even more young people with personalised, life-changing support when they need it most. We’re aware of recent media coverage and social discussion around access to hybrid closed loop (HCL) in Scotland. We recognise the concern this is causing, particularly in light of reports about delays or stopped starts. We are in direct conversation with key stakeholders to establish the facts and ensure there is a clear understanding of what is happening in practice. Access to diabetes technology is not optional. It matters. The progress made on HCL in Scotland must be protected. #GBdoc #HCL #tech

We were extremely honoured to be invited to this year’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, held by our President, Her Majesty The Queen. In attendance representing Breakthrough T1D were @parthnarendran and Niro Narendran, Tim Tree and his son, and our supporters Clare and Tony. You may recognise Parth, Tim, Clare and Tony from our BBC Lifeline Appeal earlier this year, where they so generously shared their personal experiences of type 1 diabetes and the impact of our research to date. Our sincere thanks to Buckingham Palace and to Her Majesty for this very special privilege. 💙 @RoyalFamily @elsadiabetes #T1D #Type1Diabetes

Just seen a 'contract' issued by a #NHS team to a child with #T1Diabetes- that to keep their Insulin Pump- you must have 70% Time In Range. Firstly? It's illegal to do so Secondly? That's not even clinically logical Importantly? Healthcare is about humanity For clarity- this is NOT an ask from @NHSEngland Just a reminder -at this stage. Please don't do silly things. Also...am still around. Thanks. #gbdoc @BT1DUK @DiabetesUK

We were delighted to win a Long Term Impact Award at the SMF 25th Anniversary Dinner last night, recognising the contribution of Breakthrough T1D and DUK to the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge. A very special moment, and a reminder of what can happen when passionate people come together behind a shared mission. 🤝 Grateful to everyone who is helping to make it possible. The work continues. 💙 #SMFAwards26 #GBDoc #Breakthrought1d

There exists NO gap based on ethnicity and deprivation as regards access to Continuous Glucose Monitors in #T1Diabetes @NHSEngland The subsequent roll out of Hybrid Closed Loop in #T1D has continued to follow the same trend- appropriately using money for 1st 2 years in a 5 year implementation plan. Implementation of a @NICEComms TA - at scale- tackling gaps With money ring fenced for next 3 years to enable further uptake across eligible population And improvement in health outcomes at a population level as per national audits I repeat- it can be done. Within this #NHS Yet- most are not willing to do the hard yards needed to make it happen. And are too busy compromising in the quest for some 'bigger picture' @BT1DUK @DiabetesUK @ABCDiab Link: theguardian.com/society/2026…

We’re excited about what the future holds and the progress still to come. 💙 #SMFconference26 #SMFawards26 #GBDoc
