Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is hitting South Korea especially hard. The country’s new president is now forced to choose between energy supplies, industrial competitiveness, and his own progressive agenda.

South Korea is far from the warzone in Iran. But its economy is facing “outsized shocks,” write @darciedraudt and Tim Sahay. The country’s longstanding energy vulnerability means that shocks like these can destabilize key industries.

Ahead of Yoon Suk-Yeol's court hearing on insurrection charges, intense political polarization has come to define South Korea’s political environment.
How will the conservative party navigate this moment without a clear leader? @darciedraudt explains: carnegieendowment.org/emissa…

Honored to be featured in @hankyungmedia discussing my research on Korea’s semiconductor future. Based on a @NZpolicylab report I cowrote @70sBachchan and Hannah Jeong, Korea must pivot to clean chips as supply chains demand carbon-neutral manufacturing hankyung.com/article/2025071…
This builds on my broader research exploring how energy security isn’t just environmental, but critical for economic competitiveness and geopolitical positioning. Looking forward to sharing more research soon!
S.Koreans grew more accepting of people with different ethnic/cultural backgrounds for the 1st time in 9 years, led by those who interacted with migrants as colleagues/classmates/etc., a state survey showed. Children showed far more acceptance than adults.

Around 60% of young women voted for the liberal candidate in South Korea's recent presidential election, while a majority of young men voted for the more conservative candidates. What’s behind this stark divide? My conversation with @CarnegieEndow’s @darciedraudt:
On GPS, @ 10am & 1pm ET today on @CNN: I’ll discuss Ukraine’s stunning drone attacks (& Trump–Putin negotiations) w/ retired US Navy Adm. @stavridisj, the new era of warfare w/ top military strategist @chrismkirchhoff, post-Assad Syria w/ @DMiliband of @RESCUEorg and South Korea’s stark political gender divide w/ @CarnegieEndow’s @darciedraudt. After populists won in Poland, I’ll also examine why the lure of populism remains particularly strong in Eastern Europe
Join me on 6/9 to discuss the recent ROK presidential election! Yesterday, South Koreans elected Lee Jae-myung as their new president. What are the foreign policy implications? Panelists will include @frankaum1, @darciedraudt, and Rep. Kim Joon-hyung. quincyinst.org/events/will-l…
Korea finally has a president after an uncertain six months, but there's tricky times ahead: the economy, polarization, and a shifting geopolitical environment mean the new Lee administration will have their hands full. I spoke with @haslindatv yesterday on @Bloomberg
South Korea’s incoming Lee administration looks set to face challenges in Washington in terms of economy, security, and China. Will the new government’s pragmatic foreign policy be enough to offset potential conflicts?
@darciedraudt explained on @BloombergTV with @haslindatv ⬇️
As frontrunner Lee Jae-myung gears up for South Korea's June 3special election, his party's foreign policy has undergone a transformation from progressivism to pragmatism.
