And a serious discussion on pedestrianizing Granville Street too... being here in Madrid is a reminder of how valuable such car-free spaces are to bringing vibrancy and community to a city. #WorldClassVancouver
Remember all the people that said Vancouver wasn’t hyped for the World Cup? They’re awfully quiet now. The first two days and it’s reminiscent of the 2010 Olympics. And you’re seeing our multiculturalism on display. Closing Granville strip is the single best decision the City made. The city needs to let folks out more and after the World Cup is gone we need a serious discussion on funding year round events in Vancouver.

The only truly “unified” Ireland is a shared Ireland, that recognizes both political traditions, each deserving full parity of esteem, and doesn’t try to force unionists out of the UK without their consent. If we’re to move forward, nationalists need to have that conversation. ☘️
Today I am announcing that @FineGael will develop a new blueprint for a Unified Island for our Ard Fheis this November The work will be led by the Fine Gael Northern Ireland Engagement Group and facilitated by the very excellent, academic Professor Deirdre Heenan.

Some extreme activists are trying to bring Alberta separatism to BC. But British Columbians are proud Canadians who expect their to leaders stand up for Canada unequivocally. At every opportunity. The stakes are too high. 🇨🇦
This separatist group helped Kerry-Lynne Findlay narrowly win the leadership race after "conversations with her" about secession. What exactly did she say to them? There's only one good answer to the question of breaking up Canada: hell no.

In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel. This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide. I want to thank those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This week the most advanced AI model on the planet got switched off by a foreign government. British researchers were studying it. British companies were testing it. British hospitals were piloting it. Not any more. This isn't an AI story. It's the story of every industry we used to lead. Britain has some of the best AI talent in the world. DeepMind was built here. Our AI Safety Institute writes the rules other countries follow. We have the researchers, the universities, the standards. What we don't have is the power stations to run the data centres, the planning system to build them, or the industrial base to make the chips. So the work happens here and the value lands somewhere else. We invent. Others build. Others decide. Then we read about it on Saturday morning. Same story as the kit our soldiers don't have. Same story as the factories we used to. I spent nine months in government making this argument inside the room. I'll make it louder from outside.
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Great, detailed breakdown of Bill C-34 and its implications for social media platforms, chatbots and internet users from @mgeist.
Here’s my initial post on Digital Safety bill: gov’t taking a kitchen sink approach by throwing everything into Bill C-34 and leaving many key details to future regulations, many to be decided by a Commission that doesn’t exist yet. This will take years. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/ever…

Kyrgyzstan and Zimbabwe are rated Not Free by Freedom House, yet were among the five countries elected to the UN Security Council for 2027–2028. Authoritarian governments that restrict political rights and civil liberties at home should not be helping shape the international body charged with maintaining peace and security. Democracies cannot afford to disengage from multilateral institutions while authoritarian actors work to expand their influence. They must lean in, compete, and defend the values these institutions were created to uphold. On June 4 this year, as every year, I think back to that terrible night in 1989 when I watched China's army fire on the crowd that I was in and massacre unarmed protesters. I'll never forget the courage I saw that night, as well as the cruelty. #Tiananmen nytimes.com/2023/06/07/opini…
