2023 had the largest shortfall in #humanitarian funding ever recorded, & we know 2024 is dismal too. @devinitorg reviews the lack of #GrandBargain progress. I ask Why does the majority of funding still flow to UN agencies while NGOs are left behind? It’s time to rebalance

At the UN yesterday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and @WorldBank Group President Ajay Banga took an important step toward tackling some of the most urgent challenges facing the world’s poorest countries, with Denmark making an early commitment to this year’s replenishment of the World Bank’s IDA. As crises like climate change, debt distress, and food insecurity deepen, IDA’s mission is more vital than ever. It provides lifelines to the 75 most vulnerable nations, helping them address the intersecting crises they face while building stronger systems in health, education, and other areas of critical need. Denmark’s commitment, representing an increase of 40% on the funding it has previously provided, signals the importance of international solidarity and scaling up financing to meet today’s challenges – we must ensure IDA is fully funded and can make a lasting impact. #UNGA79 reuters.com/world/denmark-pl….

As Chair of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, Kenya presented Africa’s Common Position for COP29 during the Committee of African Heads of State on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) meeting at the sidelines of UNGA79 in New York. At COP29, Africa calls for $1.3 trillion in climate finance annually by 2030, prioritizing concessional finance to prevent escalating debt, alongside urgent reform of global financial systems. Africa also demands greater support for adaptation, loss & damage, and enhanced mitigation ambition from developed nations, while pushing for the finalization of carbon market rules to scale carbon finance across the continent.
