This is a hard time for me and my 💔 is with my friends, family and colleagues in 🇮🇱 after the brutal slaughter of innocent life. As I traverse the day from tears to the mundane it would be remiss of me to not support the open science I am here to spread. pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pna…
Please pass this on to your patient, family and caregiver networks. We will have an opportunity for discussion and time to answer questions. @CureEpilepsy@EpilepsyFdn@nyuFACES

Risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) with lamotrigine and other sodium channel modulating antiseizur… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3664…
A new paper from our Melbourne-NYU collaboration providing more reassuring data about the safety of lamotrigine re: SUDEP risk.
Although learning about SUDEP can be overwhelming, it's important to talk to your healthcare team about your risks and prevention. Dr. Patel and Dr. Privitera discuss why it is important to talk about SUDEP. #StartTheSUDEPConvo Link: bit.ly/3NXOhhI
My colleague Anli Liu (not on twitter) is looking for a motivated RA to join her team. This is a great opportunity at @nyulangone in the Liu lab liulabnyu.org. Please contact Anli.liu@nyulangone.org with CV and cover letter !
In the United States there are:
- 3.4M people with epilepsy
- 1M people with epilepsy not treatable with meds
To help those 1M people, we're developing a state-of-the-art implantable monitoring device with an $8M grant from the @NIH.

Dreier et al. report that epilepsy is associated with a reduction in lifespan of 10–12 years. Increased mortality was found across almost all causes of death examined. bit.ly/3Mv7Vlw

Some late-onset #epilepsy may be preventable. Recent work from community-based longitudinal cohort studies like FHS, ARIC, Rotterdam Study, & Cardiovascular Health Study has helped our understanding of causes & consequences of #epilepsy in older adults. @bmcneurology@nyuFACES
Orrin Devinsky, MD, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at @nyulangone discussed the critical findings on how heart rate variability may stratify individual SUDEP risk.

Very nice @BKamitaki & collaborators! Patients with drug-resistant IGE are understudied and are often an afterthought in developing new therapies. These patients have high morbidity and mortality and need more treatment options.
There are at least 1,000 epilepsy-related deaths each year in the UK. Up to 50% of these deaths are due to Sudden Unexpected Death in #Epilepsy (#SUDEP - when a person with epilepsy dies suddenly, prematurely & no other reason for death is found)
