Yesterday I shared @RESCUEorg @RESCUE_UK data on the 16 most climate-vulnerable and conflict-affected countries in the world, like Sudan, Syria & Myanmar. I was pleased to hear Development Minister @AnnelieseDodds' commitment to climate finance for adaptation in these places.

Huge congratulations to Masoma and Halyna on helping to expand employment support for Ukrainians in Lewisham to include refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq! Since meeting on last year's IRC Leadership Programme, they've used the skills they learned to help other refugees.

Good to see this recognition of the importance of refugees’ access to work and services. Greater refugee inclusion relies on a ‘people-first’ approach and more World Bank partnerships with civil society, refugee and women-led organizations.
Refugee situations are not just short-term crises; they last. Letting refugees work & access services helps them do better, and reduces the medium-term costs to host countries. Read the #WDR2023 for findings & recommendations for #BetterMigration ➡️ wrld.bg/nfPT50NQl8W

Parliament should reconsider the Government’s new refugee Bill during its next stages, and uphold the fundamental right to asylum. Statement from @laurakyrkesmith @RESCUE_UK after last night’s Committee stage👇
The IRC urges Parliament to reconsider the Refugee Ban Bill. "If passed, this legislation effectively amounts to an asylum ban. It will deny protection to many people fleeing war and persecution in need of safety" More from the IRC's @laurakyrkesmith : rescue.org/uk/press-release/…

As @RESCUE_UK's @djayasinghe said recently: “Home Office support in the UK for those fleeing conflict and persecution is essential, but should come primarily from outside ODA - not at the expense of those living through crises overseas.” standard.co.uk/news/politics…
Staggering number in new 2021 UK aid stats released today: even in 2021, the UK spent more foreign aid (£756m) on "increased accommodation costs for the rising number of asylum seekers coming to the UK" than it did on humanitarian aid (£743m). gov.uk/government/statistics…

This 100m figure is - I would guess - a ref to the UN’s calculation that 100m are fleeing conflict and disaster. But most do not cross a border. 55 million are “internally displaced” - eg Syrians who fled from Aleppo to Idlib. The idea they are all coming to UK is absurd.
Suella Braverman: "There are 100 million people around the world who could qualify for protection under our current laws. Let's be clear. They are coming here." Absurd and inflammatory from the Home Secretary. Only a tiny proportion of world's refugees attempt to come to the UK.
