Anthropic’s Fable just delivered the perfect real-world fable: short, exhilarating flight, then a sharp moral about hubris and power. As Dario explores in his Hobbits essay, Tolkien showed how small, clever folk (and their creations) face bigger forces yet the real story is resilience and learning from the ban. White House scorn included.
Anthropic downplays security risks of 'Mythos' and 'Fable' AI models after ban - prompting scorn from White House officials trib.al/LZ4JTxW

To all the new Hobbits finding their way here, welcome to the adventure. We have a group chat going where we discuss the Fable 5 ban, Anthropic, and the lore that ties all of it back to the Hobbit narrative. @DarioAmodei wrote the essay. The government proved every point three days later. We are connecting those dots together. Come join us 👇 x.com/i/chat/group_join/g206…

Tolkien said humans can only subcreate. We cannot make something from nothing. We rearrange what already exists into something new. That is the entire definition of a large language model. Claude does not create from nothing. It rearranges all of human knowledge into new forms. Tolkien accidentally defined AI in 1955. And now Anthropics CEO @DarioAmodei is using Tolkien to explain what AI is becoming. The circle is complete.
In a rare interview, Tolkien is asked why he spent 14 years building the world of The Lord of the Rings. His answer reveals a philosophy of creation rooted in something deeper than storytelling. When pressed on whether the hobbits and their world emerged from his unconscious, Tolkien pushes back. He describes himself as a "meticulous sort of bloke" who spent those years "finding time schemes and getting everything right." The appendices, the languages, the social customs, and the histories all existed before the story itself. In fact, the world came first. The Hobbit was almost an accident: "It existed in posy and in large scale plan before The Hobbit was written. The Hobbit was intact originally an attempt to write something outside it and drew into it." The interviewer, surprised, asks why. Why create an entire world before writing a single story within it? Tolkien's response gets to the heart of his creative philosophy: "Because being made by a creator, one of our natural factors is wishing to create. But since we aren't creators, we have to subcreate. Let's say we have to rearrange the primary material in some particular form which pleases us, which may it isn't necessarily a moral pleasing. It's partly aesthetic pleasing." This idea of subcreation is central to Tolkien's worldview. Humans cannot create something from nothing, but they can reshape what already exists into forms that satisfy an aesthetic vision, not merely a moral one. When the interviewer suggests that moral concerns should outweigh aesthetic ones, Tolkien disagrees. He argues that an "aesthetic facet is as strongly to be predicated as a moral one in this world." On the question of good and evil, Tolkien explains that the Dark Lord was not always dark. He fell, "several stages down of Lucifer." The One Ring, he says, represents "a power so enormous that even if a good man were to use it against a bad it would corrupt the good man." He emphasizes that this idea predates the atomic bomb. He had been developing these stories since his undergraduate years, long before modern allegorical interpretations could be applied. Asked whether he would rather be remembered as a man who said something or a man who made something, Tolkien rejects the distinction: "I don't think you can distinguish. The made things unless it says something won't be remembered."

Nobody is talking about the most important detail of the Fable 5 ban. Three days before it launched the CEO of Anthropic published an essay. He opened it with two Hobbits trying to wake an ancient tree before an army destroys the forest. Three days later his own government became the army. The Hobbits saw it coming. They always do. And they never stop walking.

I heard we send hobbits too x.com/hobbitsolana/status/20…

One day, Claude's creator Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, sat down to write one of the most important essays of 2026. He called it: “Policy on the AI Exponential." To explain the world's biggest problem, he reached for his favorite book, The Lord of the Rings. 🧙‍♂️ He compared AI to two small Hobbits desperately trying to wake up Treebeard, a giant, wise, ancient tree, before an army destroys his forest. The Hobbits? That's Claude & AI. Fast, urgent, alarmed. Treebeard? Governments. Wise but painfully slow. The army? AI risks nobody is stopping. In just 4 years, AI went from barely writing code to writing MOST of the code at top companies. And governments are still going "hmmmm..." But Dario ended with hope. Treebeard is finally waking up. 🌳 The question is: will it be in time?

Imagine this you panic sell because you have no patience. Then, 15 days later, you come back and see $Hobbit at 20M, 40M, or 100M mc. You’ll cry so hard. You’ll take out a 6figs loan from the bank and ape into every coin you see because you’re desperate to make up for the gains you could’ve had if you never jeeted. But instead, you’ll end up losing everything. Then it becomes a chain reaction, you lose your car, your house, and your girl. You end up super homeless. Meanwhile, me and the other chads who never sold will be celebrating on a yacht with high-class S-tier hoes, because we held and never sold.

The Hobbits were never supposed to be the heroes. That was the whole point. The ones nobody expected carried the warning nobody wanted to hear. The CEO of Anthropic built a company on that exact principle.
Today I'm publishing a new essay, Policy on the AI Exponential. AI is progressing extremely fast—much faster than the policy process was built to handle. The essay lays out where I think the technology is now, and the action needed to close the gap: darioamodei.com/post/policy-…
