In todayโ€™s seminar, Idan Efroni @efronilab presented his algorithm for uncovering conserved non-coding sequences that have quietly shaped plant gene expression over evolutionary time. These elements reveal the regulatory grammar we can reuse when designing promoters.๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒป

300 Million year old plant DNA blueprint decoded๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿงฌ An international team led by Hebrew U's Prof. @efronilab in collaboration with researchers from @CSHL, @Cambridge_Uni and @UMass, identified 2.3M conserved sequences that still govern plant growth today. This discovery via the "Conservatory" tool opens new paths for more resilient crops. Read here: bioengineer.org/300-million-โ€ฆ

Wound repair demands extra energy and building blocks. In our manuscript, we show that wounding activates local sugar transport to funnel carbohydrates to the regeneration site. We also introduce a new glucose sensor in plants. Is this how plants coordinate repair and growth?

We found that cytokinin-induced LBDs drive radial growth in Arabidopsis root by reshaping primary cell wall pectin, in part through four pectate-lyase-like genes. Huge congrats to the fantastic postdocs who led this work: Lingling Ye and Xin Wang nature.com/articles/s41477-0โ€ฆ

Plant developmental genes share functions & expression, but align orthologs' promoters and oftenโ€ฆ no conservation. Or is there? In our new preprint, we show that conservation exists and is ancient, but was just obscured by genome complexity. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/โ€ฆ

New regulatory sequences? come from duplications. Regulatory sequences diverge asymmetrically amongst paralogs. One tends to keep the old sequence, while the other diverges, before being fixed. Not all lineages are the same. Some (Poaceae!) underwent massive divergence early on.

You can explore the dataset for 283 plant species at conservatorycns.com. We welcome questions and suggestions! Finally, none would have been possible without Kirk Amundson, Anat Hendelman, and the collaboration we maintained through very dark and difficult times.
