Glaciers are retreating at unprecedented rates, reshaping landscapes and impacting billions worldwide. As crucial freshwater sources (holding 70% of the global supply), sensitive climate change indicators, and vital components of ecosystems, glaciers demand our attention.
The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), the Earth's Third Pole, shares this vulnerability with the Arctic. Both regions are experiencing rapid cryosphere melt, leading to water insecurity, sea level rise, ecosystem degradation, and increased geohazards like glacier lake outburst floods and landslides, negatively affecting local communities, Indigenous groups, and downstream populations.
Significant gaps remain in glacier monitoring, especially in high mountain regions. To address this and discuss innovative solutions benefiting both regions, we are inviting researchers to share their latest data and solutions to cryosphere challenges at the Second Inter-Polar Conference: Connecting the Arctic with the Third Pole HKH – Cryosphere, People, and Climate Change (2025).
The abstract deadline is: 30 April 2025
Join us on 3-5 September 2025 at ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal to explore the effects of climate change on the cryosphere, and ecosystems. We will delve into the shared challenges of the HKH and the Arctic cryosphere, identifying common grounds for solutions and actions to address impacts.
This includes understanding the cultural and spiritual significance of glaciers, recognising their role in supporting livelihoods and economies, and acknowledging their importance as a testimony to Earth's history.
Connect with global experts and exchange perspectives and insights that can translate into concrete actions and long-term strategies for preserving Earth’s frozen assets and build resilience. Immediate, ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations is crucial to stabilise the climate, preserve glaciers, and secure a sustainable future.
This conference is jointly organised by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, and the Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) in collaboration with the UArctic Chair in Arctic Legal Research, and the UArctic Law Thematic Network.
