I joined the Army at 17 years old. I was 11B. Thought I had life all figured out. While I was active, I’d spend the weekends getting plastered so bad I wouldn’t remember most weekends. We made trips all over the country. That attitude stayed with me when I finally came home. It actually grew to the week days as well since I had no one to stop me. I spent over a year living on the streets. Winter was the roughest, I had to find ways to stay warm. Alcohol helped with its artificial warmth. Little did I know that life would continue to get worse. I went through rehab in 2011-2012. I still wasn’t ready. I graduated that live in program drinking at the end. I went to AA meetings and met more party animals.
The truth is, you have to be willing to help yourself before you can get sober. It’s a very hard battle to face alone.
