πŸ‘‡ we leveraged a large language model (ChatGPT-like) approach to identify infrequent circumstances preceding female firearm suicide deaths in unstructured coroner/medical examiner and law enforcement incident narrative data (e.g., sleep problems, dementia, sexual violence).

Our large language model approach outperformed a conventional NLP/supervised machine learning approach by a wide margin. πŸ‘€This suggests that large language models can be used to unlock textual analysis in public health research. @lauracprater

I mentioned that our firearm homicide rate is more than 100x higher than that of England Wales. But high firearm homicides drive up our overall homicide rate, making the US a stark outlier among developed nations.

A sobering thread πŸ‘‡ (although not surprising). We have much work to do across multiple determinants of health.
NEW: I’m not sure people fully appreciate how dire the US life expectancy / mortality situation has got. My column: enterprise-sharing.ft.com/re… And some utterly damning charts. 1) at *every* point on the income distribution, Americans live shorter lives than the English.

In this in-press @AmJPrevMed paper, we (@lauracprater, myself, and awesome team) developed a straightforward/conventional NLP pipeline to classify circumstances preceding female firearm suicide deaths using incident narratives from NVDRS. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Certain machine learning algorithms performed better than others. But our experience demonstrated the need to balance resource-intensive NLP dev w/ other approaches for public health practice. We thank @GunResearch for supporting this research. More findings forthcoming!

In this @Health_Affairs Forefront article, we discuss the potential policy implications of public detachment and desensitization to firearm violence, as well as evidence and recommendations for policy researchers, media, and clinicians. πŸ‘‡
In their new Forefront article, @evangoldstein @lauracprater of @UUtah @UW discuss how firearm violence in the US the endless stream of media coverage about firearm violence may be fatiguing the US public to remain politically activated. #GunControl bit.ly/3EuHQjT
