.@thebasepoint & I just put a long-marinated @biorxivpreprint up (biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…). A spin-off of our California mosquito study (elifesciences.org/articles/6…), it's a love letter to Orthomyxoviridae & metagenomic virus discovery studies. Lots to unpack, so let's thread. 1/11

Science is a marathon & there's no country that prospered by politicising science or rejecting their own scientists. Political capital built on an anti-science platform is difficult to spend in a future where everyone is worse off. Find me on mastodon (@evogytis@mstdn.science).

TV Dozhd had a planned hearing with the Latvian authorities, but their representatives appeared without an interpreter just expecting everyone there to speak Russian with them. Russian liberals are not imperialists at all.

#SpriedArDelfi

"Chroma, give me the smallest possible protein with rRNA N-glycosylase activity that does not have billions of years' worth of evolutionary baggage that required every intermediate protein to carry out a beneficial function." Maybe worth starting to think about implications now?
Today we introduced Chroma, a generative model that creates new proteins & protein complexes given geometric & functional constraints. It learns to transform unstructured, random 3D shapes into #protein molecules, which can have tens of thousands of atoms. ow.ly/Txn750LShFp

Bombali ebolavirus is distributed as far as Mozambique it turns out. It hasn't caused human disease (yet) but given that concurrent Ebola virus outbreaks have become common we should probably invest more in understanding the ecology of filoviruses. wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/28…

In a remarkable show of cooperation @KLM & @airBaltic (the latter's employees stole my partner's DSLR camera from her suitcase some years back) organised an impressive quest for me at @ParisAeroport. The flight @KLM rebooked me on was already 32 hours late by the way. 1/

With another 2 hour delay, I was spending a 9 hour layover with @KLM & @airBaltic representatives shifting blame & making me run around CDG for meal vouchers. Finally it turned out all I get is €6 from one cafe. Could've saved the calories by staying put. Shame on you both. 2/
