On August 22,2025, White privileged Iryna Zarutska died terrified, confused, and alone on a Charlotte,NC light rail train on her way home from work. She had been stabbed 3 times from behind, including at least once in the neck.
As blood loss began draining the life out of her, she cowered in fear hoping he was done as the man, a life-long criminal, paced around her.
While just some White girl’s life was ending, witnesses couldn’t care less. And if they did, they were likely more concerned they’d have to look for another seat if that pool of blood started flowing their way.
The only comfort she would have for her last few seconds was to cover her face with her hands before slumping out of her seat and onto the floor. Never making a sound.
Had she been conscious long enough, she would have heard the man brag to other passengers what sounded like “I got that White girl”, and had the privilege of knowing she was killed because she was White.
Before moving to Charlotte, Iryna had lived in one of the most heavily shelled areas of Ukraine in the Solomianskyi District in Kyiv after the Russian invasion in February 2022. After four straight months of living with family in a bomb shelter, she left her home country for what she thought would be the safety and security of America.
She lived through 6 months of war, but wouldn’t live more than 5 minutes on American public transportation.
