Just deposited on bioRxiv: “Differentiation signals from glia are fine-tuned to set neuronal numbers during development”. Primarily the work of Anadika Prasad and Matthew Bostock, who were supported by Inês Baldaia-Lago and Zaynab Housseini. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

(2) Besides regulating proliferation or survival, neuronal numbers can be set by regulating the number of neural precursors induced to differentiate. Tissue architecture and feedback inhibition by newly born neurons limit differentiation signals from glia to do so in the lamina.

(3) Programmed cell death in the brain is assumed to be regulated intrinsically when stereotyped and predictable vs. extrinsically when stochastic. We show that in the lamina tissue architecture can establish stereotyped patterns of apoptosis in response to extrinsic signals.
