People don't realize this but there's an extinction level event happening at US universities right now. My old department at Harvard cut the number of new PhD students by 75%, most of those were American trainees.
American science is falling off a cliff.
My NSF postdoc opportunity was once due yesterday, the first Monday in February, but has been archived since last week, which has made this one of the more painful and frustrating weeks of my academic career yet
You have until October 24th to see a comet with the naked eye! Tim Brothers from the Wallace Observatory recommends giving your eyes time to adjust and to get away from lights if you want to go see this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The polar vortex elongated and weakened over Antarctica in July and August 2024, causing rare warming events in the stratosphere – the second-lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. go.nasa.gov/47e13Un
Scientists are still investigating the cause of these sudden warming events.
ALT Graphic showing the air temperature in the stratosphere over Antarctica. There are two globes focused on the South Pole. The one on the left is for August 2023. There is a roughly circular shape of black ringed in purple, indicating temperatures around minus 75 degrees Celsius. The surrounding area is orange and yellow, indicating temperatures around minus 55 to minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit. The one on the right is for August 2024 and has a long, thin black and purple area in the center, illustrating how the polar vortex weakened and elongated.
Until this heatwave... Sweden 🇸🇪 and Norway 🇳🇴 had never hit > 30 °C in September. New national records have been set and by huge margin.
Extraordinary weather pattern in Europe right now.
THREAD
I am running out of words to describe how absurd August 2024 was in Svalbard.
Reaching an average temperature of 11°C in August would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. This is totally bonkers.

mit finds that despite all efforts to recruit and offer financial aid to disadvantaged and low-income applicants in non-race-based ways, there are now fewer black first-years enrolling at mit than in ... 1982

abbreviated:
1. After the SFFA decision, we expanded our recruitment and financial aid initiatives to further improve access for students from all backgrounds
2. Despite this, there was still a significant decline in enrollment from underrepresented racial/ethnic backgrounds
3. This is because the SFFA decisions effectively bans our ability to consider race/ethnicity to assemble a broadly diverse class, and students from historically underrepresented backgrounds are underrepresented due to profound racial inequality in American education
4. This big change in class composition comes with no change to the quantifiable academic characteristics of the class
5. However, the SFFA decision threatens the qualitative strength of an MIT education, both by reducing the educational benefits of diversity and by making MIT less attractive to the best students from all backgrounds
Happy to announce the publication of a special issue on geomorphology and glacier/ice sheet behaviour! 🧊🏔️
We have 22 research articles, covering a range of timescales, spatial scales, methodological approaches and glacial processes.

ALT Geomorphology can facilitate a better understanding of glacier and ice sheet behaviour in several ways: by moderating glacial response to climate change; by providing rates of glacier change and sensitivity to climate; as information of ice flow properties and basal conditions; and as constraints for ice sheet modelling.
