By striking the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the greatest holy sites of Christianity, Putin has forever put his name on the list of history’s worst barbarians. He should be damned for centuries. And he will lose this war. From the Horde in the 13th century to the Nazis and Bolsheviks in the 20th century, Kyiv’s sacred monasteries have suffered numerous barbarically attacks. Now we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already outmatched ISIS in their crimes against cultural heritage. Only Russian scum who have nothing sacred can deliberately damage the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique UNESCO heritage site under special protection. We will be urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding immediate and adequate responses to this state barbarism. We expect strong reactions by international institutions and capitals. No vague words, silence, or weak steps. We need action now to stop Russian barbarism.

Constantinople/Istanbul was also more Christian then, and originally, even as capital of the Ottoman Empire.
In 1927, the Jews of Istanbul constituted around 15% of the city’s total population. That’s more Jewish than New York City today. 99 years later, Jews make up barely 0.06% of Istanbul’s total. What happened to Istanbul’s Jewish community? In my new book, Looking For Elsewhere: The Jews of Turkey Then and Now I explain why this came to be while investigating what this means for Jews living there today. #Turkey #Jews #JewishHistory #antisemitism Here are the links to pre-order: UK: amzn.eu/d/06Uy0mVN USA: a.co/d/0ey8SISW Canada: a.co/d/0f1Vggvt

We are utterly shocked to learn of Rovshan’s passing at a conference in Istanbul today 3 June. Aged only 39, he was a supremely capable and young leader who already accomplished so much for humanity in his humble but fortright manner as the strong, visionary, and compassionate helmsman steering NGIC to the enabling centre of world affairs, in a most sage manner in emulation of the historic Nizami Ganjavi himself. His very premature passing is an incalculable loss not just to his team, NGIC, and his beloved Azerbaijan, but to the world at large, and to the cause of multilateralism, peace, security and human dignity. May he rest in peace and the embrace of his Creator, and long may his memory and deeds be cherished by his family, friends, and by all of us who had the great privilege to know him. 🙏🇦🇿
It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we inform Rovshan Muradov’s many friends and admirers around the world that he has passed away unexpectedly in Istanbul. He was there engaged in the work he so loved—organizing the participation of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC) in an important international conference in Türkiye. Rovshan was one of the founding members of the NGIC and served as its Secretary-General from its first days. Through his vision, dedication, and tireless efforts, he played a central role in building the institution into the internationally respected organization it is today. He recruited, mentored, and inspired the staff, established enduring partnerships across continents, and worked ceaselessly to strengthen the bonds of friendship among the Center’s distinguished members. More than an able administrator and accomplished international figure, Rovshan possessed a rare gift for bringing people together. Through his warmth, and generosity of spirit, he fostered not only professional collaboration but also a genuine sense of family within the NGIC community. He was deeply respected, greatly admired, and sincerely loved by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His passing leaves an immense void in our hearts and in the life of the institution to which he devoted so much of himself. His legacy will endure in the organization he helped create, in the many friendships he nurtured, and in the countless lives he touched. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and his many friends throughout the world. May they find comfort in the knowledge that Rovshan’s life was one of service, friendship, and lasting achievement, and that his memory will remain with us always. Further information regarding memorial arrangements and opportunities to honor Rovshan’s memory will be communicated in due course.

Ouch!
"You're f****** crazy. You'd be in prison if it weren't for me. I'm saving your a***. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this." That's what a U.S. official tells Axios President Trump unloaded on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a heated phone call over Israel's military actions in Lebanon. Trump was reportedly furious that Israel's moves risked blowing up U.S. diplomatic efforts in the region, at one point also asking Netanyahu: "What the f*** are you doing?"

In memoriam: Tomi #Reichental passed away today at the age of 90 years. Before he made public his Belsen survival story, which took him away to celebrity status, he was a very good jeweller for my late father and our family, fond of our Jerusalem reminiscences. Tomi was born 1935 in Piestany, #Slovakia (where I served as SMOM ambassador 2009-2013). At the age of nine he was sent to Bergen-Belsen with several members of his family. After liberation, the Reichentals returned to the family home in Merašice, but when Tomi was fourteen they emigrated to Israel. Later, he studied engineering in Germany and after qualification came to Ireland in 1959 to work. He married an Irish girl in 1961 and they had three sons. Tomi never spoke about his Belsen experience until recent years, but thereafter spent much of his time lecturing in schools, colleges, universities and to other interested groups, including the Dáil and army camps, in Ireland and elsewhere about his experience of the Holocaust. He worked tirelessly to combat anti-semitism, xenophobia and racism. May he rest in peace and his life be celebrated for his commitment to the cause of reconciliation and highlighting the futility of hatred. Our condolences to his family, to my good friend Stuart Rosenblatt (genealogist of the Jewish community in Ireland), and to the Jewish community, as well as his friends in Israel and Slovakia @OBrienPress @SlovakiaMFA @HMcEntee @dfatirl @SVKembassyIRL @Tzipi_Livni @AGatnar @RachelMoiselle @Holocaust_Irl @MerriganMl @Sasha_Etkind @GarySlutkin1

The UK was right to recognise the State of Palestine. But recognition means little unless Ministers protect the territorial basis of that state. With E1 tenders opening on 1 June, I’ve urged the Foreign Secretary to make clear UK firms must not aid illegal settlement expansion.

Like the late Zoran Djinjić, he was a philosopher as well as a politician, and I had the privilege to collaborate with both of them during my UN tenure in Belgrade (2000-2004). Drago was one also one of the famous “Belgrade Eight”, an intellectual powerhouse of Praxis School philosophers who met annually on Korcula. @CIRSD @_WAAS_ @pass_blue @KatoikosWorld @OpenSociety @AlexanderSoros @IVejvoda @ClubdeMadrid @_DaniloTurk
The passing of Dragoljub Mićunović at the grand old age of 96, is greatly regretted, with a life of public service and political leadership in Yugoslavia and later #Serbia, rightly celebrated and to be long remembered @sindidun n1info.rs/vesti/preminuo-dra…

Just think about this: Cain’s expulsion from Eden. The first refugees.

Time for change, for a better Russia? Long overdue - and far from happening yet. But perhaps … it might be nudged along? It’s up to Russians to have the courage to do this, and start at the top

Corruption wasn’t enough: systemic blackmail has been added to the Trump ”legacy” - but the history of despots shows that régime change will radically alter the record to permanent ignominy. Just watch the Orban “legacy” unwind in Hungary. Eventually such narcissistic rulers are blinded and isolated by their own delusion bubble, the more so the bigger their megalomania. 🙈🙉🙊🐷🔥⛔️ @anders_aslund @anneapplebaum @pass_blue
Not enough people are talking about this. A Florida airport was renamed after Donald Trump. He walked away with the trademark, the licensing rights, and a deal that lets him profit off every piece of merchandise sold there. But the story of how he got it is even worse. County staff told commissioners that rejecting the name change would put state transportation funding at risk. DeSantis has already removed state attorneys and school board members who dared to cross him. That is the reality the Democratic commissioner who cast the deciding vote was living in when she made her choice: hand Donald Trump control of a public airport or watch Florida Republicans strip funding from the very people she was elected to represent. That is absolutely insane. Florida Republicans handed Trump a money machine and called it a naming rights deal, and the people of Palm Beach County never got a say in any of it. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

Good grief. Now it seems America itself needs régime change, judicial independence, and re-democratisation. A new project for the UN and its next Secretary-General? 😱

So true, and so dangerous: "The burden of unrecognized wrongdoing is becoming a domestic and international time bomb. A similar, albeit structurally different, dynamic is observed in the United States, where the unresolved imperial legacy is reflected in polarization, mistrust of institutions, and moral disorientation in foreign policy. Today, we see not only the international community's helplessness in the face of impunity, but also the open violation of international law by democratic states." @inna_berezkina hits the nail on the head.

This joint Israeli-Palestinian mutual death wish has to stop. There is another way, as many have proven. Begin by halting the violence, and talking respectfully to each other, either because you are faithful Jews, Muslims, Christians, or regardless of that, because you are humans who deserve life, dignity, security, and well-being. Re-define your political ambitions in ways that accept the rich diversity of that sacred land - at present your competing and exclusivist rivalries are destroying the place you - and we - love so much. We learnt the lesson in Northern Ireland - you can too. As the "buck stops" in the White House, only the incumbent of the Oval Office can pull this off, but not the way he tries so far - there is a much better way, and time is running out. @NoaAchinoamNini @noatishby @GlencreeCentre @SusieWiles @SusieWiles47
