I appreciate the Secretary General’s confidence in my ability to steer these two important offices at the Under Secretary General level, at this critical point. Coming on the eve of the International Women’s Day, this appointment is demonstrative of the UNSG’s belief in women leadership. I sincerely thank H.E. President William Ruto @WilliamsRuto for the confidence he bestowed upon me in serving him as his, and the first, National Security Advisor of the Republic of Kenya, as Secretary to the National Security Council, and for enabling me to take this global assignment, demonstrating yet again his belief in Kenya making its contribution to the community of nations. The election of Prof. @PhoebeOkowa by the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council in New York earlier today marks a historic moment not only for Kenya, but for the Court as Prof. Okowa becomes only the seventh female Judge of the Court in its 80-year history. It has been months of intense campaigns and I am grateful to the leadership of the @ForeignOfficeKE for overall strategic support, the indefatigable team at the @KenyaMissionUN that I am proud to lead for all the heavy-lifting and all Member States of the UN for their support. Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.
