I can't think of a worse option than Wes Streeting as replacement.

Many people seem to think that general practice, as a discipline, is easy. The longer I practised as a GP, the more I became aware of the uncertainties of medicine. To fully own a problem with a patient, hold that risk, and see it through carries a huge weight of responsibility

I think the skillset of GPs is enormously underestimated, including by doctors unfortunately. Patients don’t just present with discrete episodes (which the ACP model is designed for), it’s all interwoven. This attempt at efficiency surely produces the exact opposite.

NHS staff are desperate and patients have experienced untold disruption, but the Government refuses to lift a finger to negotiate a compromise to stop further chaos. This is a Government that’s clocked off for Christmas, leaving NHS staff picking up the pieces. Disgraceful.

Wesley has been telling fibs again. Santa’s not going to be happy. @wesstreeting
Looks like Wes Streeting, Kier Starmer & the whole DHSC media spin team are bang to rights here by JVT. Currently no super flu & no NHS wide crisis. A lot of apologies needed from those players and the media in general. As we’ve said, even if it became a problem we’d use derogation.

The NHS survived this year because staff absorbed the consequences of decisions they didn’t make, chaos they didn’t create. The blunt message from this year is the NHS is led by someone who isn’t clever enough, experienced enough and is too cocky by half. myemail.constantcontact.com/…

Now we know why Rishi Sunak refuses to negotiate with NHS staff. He wants the strikes to go ahead, so he can blame doctors and nurses for his failure. #PMQs

I'm only a humble ED doc but I can't help thinking that the problem in our EDs isn't caused by patients, it's caused by political failure. Last time I looked it wasn't patients with hiccups in my corridors, it was sick elderly patients who we couldn't get into a hospital bed

1/ Imagine you’re waiting for ice cream. 🍦 There’s one pro scooping — fast, smooth, efficient. Now she’s replaced by 3 helpers who sort of know what they’re doing. They spill more, take longer, and keep asking for help. That’s what’s happening inside the NHS. Welcome to queuing theory.

Very hard to believe that this is a Labour Government or that Wes Streeting really understands how doctors are trained. A complete shambles. 😠

Very bizarre attempt at power move Threaten the public that he will sabotage provision of skilled doctors deliberately if junior doctors complain about pay

selective emphasis determines what the public ‘thinks about’, rather than what they ‘think’. >Only 4% of us will be using the NHS at any time. Most will think they've had a positive experience. >The other 96% will think about the NHS, and it's broken. myemail.constantcontact.com/…

Wes is normally the master of saying different things to different people, but this article is a mess. Strikes were simultaneously infective and hugely damaging. Doctors are both people he wants to work with and an enemy to be defeated. You can't have it both ways Wes.
Why is @wesstreeting talking about "war" with doctors? Doctors do not want or have not asked for any "war." Doctors just want a reasonable journey to pay restoration. This kind of rhetoric is unnecessary and needlessly inflammatory. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Wes whilst good to note how effective primary care is - we could do a lot more if resourced properly rather than miserly 6% of total budget. 20-30% of GP workload is admin burden, which could be freed up. Also population grew 1.1% past year, & 7m extra appointments only ⬆️1.8%

I am absolutely horrified by the scenes in Liverpool. My thoughts are with everybody affected. Liverpool will always hold a special place in my heart — it is a city of unique strength, spirit and unity. Tonight and always, you’ll never walk alone.

Good piece here on the twin dangers of non-medical staff and remote consultation. While transactional consults can be useful, ultimately these 'innovations' degrade care and are less efficient.

There have been several clinical incidents and a small number of patient deaths associated with remote consultations and new roles in general practice. @DrBekkiR looks at three key problems with these developments and how we ensure patient safety bmj.com/content/388/bmj.r261…
