Arrived late last night in New Brunswick and woke up grateful to be back in community with so many friends, partners, students, and leaders at
#BonnerSLI26 @cityofnewbruns
Already feeling the
#bonnerlove after a powerful start to the 2026 Bonner Summer Leadership Institute at
@rutgersnb. The morning session, “Senior Leaders on Crisis, Change, and Community Engagement,” was such an important reminder of the moment higher education is navigating right now that includes: financial strain, public trust, enrollment shifts, political headwinds, and rising student needs, and why community engagement has to be connected directly to institutional priorities like student success, belonging, civic trust, partnerships, and sustainability.
Grateful to learn from Tiffiny Butler, Sanda Balaban of
@ProjectPericles, Carol Geary Schneider of
@aacu /CLDE, and Ariane Hoy of the Bonner Foundation, and especially fortunate to spend time with Tiffiny, Brian, Abby, and the Rutgers Collaborative Center team, who help oversee RCommunity powered by GivePulse.
Also loved being part of the annual networking and partners fair and reconnecting with so many Bonner campuses, students, staff, and friends, including The Bonner Foundation, Depauw University Bonner Scholars Program,
@DePauwU, Centre College Bonner,
@CentreC, Montclair State University Bonner Leaders, Montclair State University Community Engagement and Partnerships, Montclair State University NextGen Service Corps,
@montclairstateu, Sewanee,
@sewaneeOCE, The Carson-Newman Bonner Scholars Program, Carson-Newman Bonner Community Engagement,
@carson_newman_u,
@RhodesCollege, Rhodes College Bonner Center, UH Hilo Center for Community Engagement,
@UHHilo, and so many more.
A few early highlights already: constructive dialogue and bridge-building with Nick Longo from Rutgers Democracy Lab and Kuminjot Bal, and a meaningful session, “Volunteering is my Niche,” with Nereida Delgado Garcia from the Garfield Public Library, Jessica Pichardo with Montclair State University NextGen Service Corps and Mariana Luna Martinez on how service, community involvement, and lived experience can help students name their leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and purpose, and translate those experiences into resumes, interviews, graduate school, careers, and lifelong civic pathways.
That is what we love about this community: it is not just about service as an activity, but service as a way to build belonging, leadership, purpose, and pathways for students and communities.
Excited for the rest of the programming, fellowship, and continued learning with everyone. So fortunate to be part of this community.
