Andreas Schwab MEP, EPP Group spokesman for internal market and consumer protection, on DSA fine:
"The Commission today fined X €120 million for breaches of its transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA). These breaches include the misleading design of its 'blue tick', the lack of transparency in its ad storage, and the failure to grant researchers access to public data.
The proceedings against X were initiated already back in December 2023. The fact that this is the first fine under the DSA being issued shows drastically the urgent need for faster and more decisive enforcement. Democracy and public safety cannot afford to allow large platforms to flout the rules for years.
The era of self-regulation is over. If platforms like X want to operate in Europe, they must respect our rules – or face even harsher consequences, as further proceedings are underway and the Commission will be cracking down even harder in the future."
