Fly-by-night just got a whole new meaning at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana. The Indian Athletics Series 9 was underway, and the sky was pitch dark. Just after twilight, that hour when colours fade and shadows slink back into the darkness, India’s elite discus throwers and shot putters stepped into the circle. At stake? A ticket to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The floodlights were still off. Sure, more than ten massive perimeter lights burned bright around the stadium, but they were useless. You couldn’t see a discus cutting through the air. If you stood fifty meters away, you had zero chance of tracking a 7.26kg iron ball gaining height and dropping twenty meters out, roughly the length of a cricket pitch. It was downright dangerous. But the intensity of the athletes cut right through the gloom. Indian athletes are used to tough conditions. It’s a twisted rite of passage they don’t ask for, but are routinely handed. If tough, miserable conditions earned you frequent flyer miles, most of India’s track and field stars would be permanently seated in business class. The absurdity of it all is baffling. While the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) top brass sat comfortably in the darkness, heaven knows what they were actually watching, one couldn’t help but wonder if they’d brought along night-vision goggles. When you see an official measuring a national-level discus throw using the flashlight of a mobile phone, you realize “jugaad” is still the buzz word. Someone’s sanity prevailed. The discus event was abruptly halted after three throws. But the shot putters carried on in the shadows. Tejinder pal Singh Toor wasn’t just in form; he was hitting every right note. When he launched a massive 20.72m throw to seal his CWG qualification, a familiar script unfolded; Toor’s performance would become the perfect foil to sweep incompetence right under the carpet. While Toor celebrated, a bunch of frustrated discus throwers were left stranded in the dark, asking the questions that usually get ignored: “Who will pay for the overnight hotel charges? How do you psychologically shift momentum to Sunday morning now? Are we really that dispensable?” Toor, justifiably thrilled with his qualification, didn’t care to rue the conditions. “I think they were okay,” he said, flashing a smile.
