Sounds like the game industry should adopt something like apprenticeshipprograms (paid). Companies seem short sighted about the long term benefits of skilling up a junior. And having seniors delegate is an education in itself.
I think I may ask the next game company I apply to what their approach to preventing layoffs is. Because just saying 'we maximize profits' isn't enough for me anymore. And shouldn't be enough for other senior devs. We should be demanding better as an industry.
It is bonkers to me that some companies get so successful they could have created a 100 year runway for their entire team, set themselves up for making games for life, only to end up scaling up & shutting down later due to self cannibalization.
