I truly believe the BBC should be heavily reformed, if not entirely replaced with a new model. If you're honest with yourself, you might agree with me. (reform ideas at the end in the comments)
The BBC used to be a beacon of British broadcasting, but over its 100 plus year history it has strayed further and further from its founding principles, finally becoming little more than a mouthpiece for political agendas and a haven for scandal, and let's be honest a bit of a joke globally (along with most other Mainstream Media sites).
Defunding the BBC by getting rid of the TV licence or making it subscription-only, as suggested by several MPs, celebrities, and the public, is a good place to start, but I feel that it does not go far enough. When you look at all the evidence, it's clear the BBC has ignored its own Royal Charter more than once this year alone.
Bias and Misrepresentation:
There is a very noticeable tendency towards it simply repeating word-for-word whatever the government says without fact checking it, making it unreliable as a source of fair and balanced impartial news, which goes against its own charter and the reason that it exists in the first place. It is basically acting as the media department for the Labour and Conservative Parties, depending on which of them is currently “in power”.
If you want some examples, here are a few memorable ones from the last 20 years. In each of these cases, the BBC repeated what it was told without question and was found to be wrong.
1. The Iraq War (2003) - Assumed WMDs existed, favoured government sources.
2. Terror Raids (2006) - In the coverage of the Forest Gate anti-terror raid, the BBC was accused of not questioning the government's narrative, which initially painted the operation as a success. It later emerged that no evidence of terrorism was found, and the raid was criticized for its heavy-handedness.
3. Economic Forecasts (2008-2010) - During the financial crisis, the BBC often reported government forecasts and assurances about economic recovery without deep scrutiny. These forecasts were often overly optimistic, and the recovery was slower and more painful than anticipated
4. NHS Reforms (2012) - The Health and Social Care Act 2012 was presented with government assurances of increased efficiency and patient choice. However, the BBC was accused of not sufficiently challenging these claims, which were later criticized for leading to increased bureaucracy, privatization concerns, and not delivering on promised improvements.
5. The Deficit (2010-2015) - The government's narrative on reducing the deficit was often reported without deep analysis into the methods used, which included cuts to public services. The BBC did not initially challenge the long-term implications of these cuts, which were later criticized for causing permanent damage to public infrastructure and services.
6. Grenfell Tower Inquiry (2017) - The government's initial response to the Grenfell Tower fire was reported with less scrutiny regarding accountability for building regulations and safety standards. Later, it was clear that government policies on housing and safety had directly contributed to the tragedy.
7. Voter ID Trials (2018) - The BBC covered the government's trials of voter ID without questioning the potential for voter suppression or the lack of evidence for widespread voter fraud, which became evident when data showed significant numbers of people were turned away from voting. (how many times has this happened since?)
8. COVID-19 Lockdown Measures (2020-2021) - Early reporting on lockdown measures often echoed government announcements, without substantial critique or scepticism regarding the effectiveness or timing of these measures.
9. Partygate (2022) - Early reporting on the Partygate scandal, where parties were held at Downing Street during lockdown, often gave considerable airtime to government defences without equal scrutiny, especially before the full details emerged.
10.Inflation and Economic Policy (2022-2023) - The BBC's coverage of inflation and the government's economic responses often mirrored government statements on causes and solutions without initially providing in-depth analysis or contrasting economic theories.
11. Winter Fuel Payments (2024) - The decision to means-test winter fuel payments was criticized as misleadingly presented as a benefit for all pensioners, when in fact, it would reduce support for some.
12. Economic Growth Forecasts (2024) - The government's optimistic projections on GDP growth were later contradicted by actual economic performance, leading to criticisms of over-promising.
This also sheds light on how both the Labour and Conservative parties have consistently and systematically been damaging this country for years. However, that isn't what's important in the context of this article; what is important is that in each of these cases the BBC simply repeated what it was told without actually doing any journalism at all and was later found to be factually incorrect. This is not ok.
Moving beyond the issue of bias, the BBC has also been at the center of numerous scandals, revealing deeper cultural problems.
Scandals and Culture:
From Rolf Harris and Jimmy Savile to more recent cases like Huw Edwards and Adam Britton, the BBC has repeatedly been at the center of scandals that reveal not just individual failings but what amounts to a systemic culture of protectionism and secrecy.
Its staff consistently breach its own code of conduct (see images below), as recently shown very publicly by Huw Edwards back in July, (see the news article link -
bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmj2…). as a more recent example.
There have been dozens, possibly hundreds of them over the years; it has become genuinely difficult to keep track of them all.
The BBC only covers these scandals when they're forced to. They don't seem to care about it until it's public. Only then do they act like they're doing something about it, and even then it is only to save face. With all these complaints, allegations, and convictions, there's no way that nobody at the BBC knew what had been going on for several decades. Silence is compliance.
The Express has done a decent job of compiling a list of the ones from this just year, and they are not alone in detailing these sickening acts.

And it just keeps going. Honestly the more I dug into it the more sickened by it all I have become, so just know that there are many many more cases but I could only stomach so much of it at once.
If it wasn't for whistleblowers and victims being brave enough to step forward, these monsters would have simply continued on until they retired or died. Which is what actually happened in some cases.
Remember that these articles cover only a fraction of the total number of events, charges and court cases, both confirmed and alleged. And then there are likely to be untold numbers of cases that are undocumented or ongoing.
These are not isolated incidents, it is obvious to anyone looking that there have been decades of high-profile incidents at the BBC suggesting issues with an internal culture of depravity that need addressing with immediate effect.
In my opinion, the BBC is a relic of a bygone era in the age of online media. The only way to be rid of its blatant bias, corruption and its repeated and consistent tendency to attract, employ and protect those who would harm and abuse those in vulnerable positions, is tear out the rot by its root and replace it with something new, competitive and more fitting for the modern age.
The BBC is a publicly funded institution and if it is to be kept, it should be regularly scrutinized and discussed to see if it still fits the purpose it was created for.
@dshensmith @_chillijoncarne @tvlr @DefundBBC @BeccyRyan, Perhaps you have some thoughts on this? Do you feel that they have in fact broken their charter?
