It’s 16 days to the 2025 college baseball season, and @CollegeBaseCNT presents Counting Down The Years of Mississippi State Baseball. When the 2009 season began 16 years ago, there was a new head coach in town, John Cohen. Cohen had been hired by Athletic Director Greg Byrne, and to be candid, retiring head coach Ron Polk strongly objected. Polk’s reasons for supporting long-time and loyal assistant Tommy Raffo were understandable. Cohen’s track record as head coach at Northwestern State and Kentucky (winning their first-ever SEC Baseball title) supported Byrne’s reasons. What mattered most to most was that the program retained the Polk legacy, even over his objections, through a former player. When Raffo and Bobby Reed were interviewed after selection for the Ron Polk Ring of Honor, both credited him for his influence on them in discipline and details as both players and adult professionals. In a way, Cohen was a new generation of Polk. What Ron had brought to coaching baseball in the form of organization, efficiency, and SOP (his Baseball Playbook has a script to announce lineups), John introduced techology and electronic performance evaluation as an added layer to his Polk Baseball degree. The ensuing overhaul wasn’t meant to reflect prior performance, just redefine and redirect it. Polk went to Birmingham and became a volunteer assistant to protege and former assistant Brian Shoop. The public comments about removing certain stadium signage notwithstanding, the relationship with and affection for Mississippi State seemed to quietly survive, some saying he even wore maroon on Fridays. When Shoop retired, it was Cohen, now Athletic Director, who invited him back to where few disagree should be the last stop in his venerable career. Meanwhile, Cohen had a baseball team to build, losing 2008 draft picks Aaron Weatherford, Brandon Turner, Tyler Moore, and Jeff Flagg. SEC Pitcher of the Week Ricky Bowen and Grant Hogue did not sign and were back. They were joined by other lettermen, including Justin Bussey, Forrest Moore, Russ Sneed, Ryan Powers, Brooks Lewis, Jarrod Parks, Luke Adkins, Tyler Whitney, Jet Butler, Ryan Duffy, Mark Goforth, Chad Crosswhite, Jason Nappi, Nick Hardy, Johnny Allen, Michael Busby, Connor Powers, Scott Deloach, Cody Freeman, Jared Wesson, Ryan Collins, Lee Swindle, Drew Hollinghead, and Greg Houston. Newcomers competing for playing time included Frank Rawdow, Devin Jones, Paxton Pace, David Hayes, Nick Routt, Caleb Reed, Nick Ray, Brent Brownlee, and Tyler Johnson. The season got off to a great start, with a nine-game homestand and 8-1 record. In the BankFirst Baseball Challenge, Northern Illinois and North Florida were the opponents, an 11-10 loss to NIU the only blemish. South Alabama and Mississippi Valley were beaten, followed by a Saturday doubleheader sweep over Nicholls State. A third game Sunday vs. the Colonels was scheduled, but snow fell in Starkville overnight. Reports at the time contended the ballpark was clear and playable in time, but Nicholls was believed to have left town already. The MSU schedule listed the game as “No Contest.” Snow wasn’t a threat where State played their next four games, Hawaii. The Bulldogs won the opener 3-1 over the Rainbows but dropped the next three, 7-4, 10-5, and 11-5. Back home on the mainland, MSU won two over Valparaiso and two vs. South Carolina before losing in Pearl to Southern Miss 10-7. After an 8-4 home win over UAB, the team struggled the second half of the season, going 8-20 (4-16 SEC) at one stretch. On the last SEC road trip of the season to Ole Miss, the Bulldogs took the first two, 6-5 and and 11-8, with the Rebels salvaging a 9-1 Sunday win. Playing at Autozone Park, MSU defeated Memphis 6-5, and finished the season at home with LSU, winning once, 8-7. Final record was 25-29, 9-20 SEC. MLB draft picks were Powers (11th round, did not sign), Hogue (35th), and Bowen (43rd). No All-SEC, but Nick Routt was Freshman All-America.
