THE CURSE OF NAIROBI GUBERNATORIAL SEAT
NAIROBI county remains as one of the four counties that has never reelected an incumbent governor 14 years later since the dawn of Devolution!
With Embakasi East MP babu OWINO set to take over the leadership of the county in the next election cycle ,I took it upon myself to evaluate the challenges that bedevils the Capital Governors !!
1.Nairobi is politically strategic. Whoever controls Nairobi gains enormous visibility and influence. National politicians, MPs, MCAs, business interests, and political parties often seek to influence county decisions, creating constant power struggles.
2 Huge revenue streams. Nairobi collects billions of shillings annually through permits, parking fees, land rates, and other charges. Control of these resources can trigger conflicts among political and business actors.
3.Conflict with MCAs. Many Nairobi governors have had tense relationships with the County Assembly over budgets, appointments, oversight, and allegations of mismanagement. MCAs can become powerful opponents when disagreements arise.
4.National government involvement. Because Nairobi is the capital, county functions frequently overlap with national government interests. This has led to disputes over authority and control of key services and projects.
5.Land and development interests. Nairobi's land is extremely valuable. Decisions on zoning, demolitions, approvals, and public land often pit governors against influential individuals and groups.
6.High public expectations. Residents expect quick solutions to traffic, garbage collection, flooding, housing, and insecurity. When problems persist, political pressure intensifies and can fuel internal disputes.
As babu OWINO embraces his next chapter in leadership I hope he will overcome these Bumps ,the journey won't be easy !!
