Hey friends, I keep seeing the claim that marine fossils on top of Mount Everest prove the biblical Flood deposited them there just a few thousand years ago.
I get why that sounds straightforward — but the actual rocks, measurements, and even the Bible itself tell a more awe-inspiring story.
Those fossils sit in limestone that formed on the floor of an ancient ocean (the Tethys Sea) tens of millions of years ago. Then the Indian plate slammed into Asia, and the Himalayas slowly rose. GPS stations right on the mountain have been tracking this for decades. The latest data (2024 studies) show Everest is still rising at a net rate of ~2 mm per year— after all erosion from wind, rain, ice, and rivers is already subtracted. That’s the actual measured growth on the record.
Here’s the math: Current official height = 8,848.86 meters. At 2 mm/year net growth → it would take roughly 4.42 million years to reach today’s height starting from sea level. (That’s not even the full 50 million-year story of the range — it’s just using today’s observed rate.)
The Bible never says the Flood involved rapid mountain-building or instant fossil placement on 29,000-foot peaks. It only describes a water event that rose, then receded slowly, aided by wind. Genesis 8:1 says: “God remembered Noah… He sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.” Verse 3 adds the waters “receded steadily from the earth.” No mention of mountains shooting up overnight.
Instead, Scripture invites us to look at creation itself as evidence of God’s power. Romans 1:20 puts it perfectly: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
God’s creation stands today — and it doesn’t contradict the Old Earth Creation model. The same God who spoke the universe into being used breathtakingly patient processes (tectonics, erosion, isostatic rebound) to sculpt these mountains over deep time… and He still holds them up today.
Science isn’t the enemy of faith — it’s another way we get to marvel at the Creator.
