Synthesized from simple, inexpensive organic precursors, they are widely utilized in biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, and optoelectronic devices. Core Properties & Characteristics Fluorescence: They emit bright, tunable fluorescence that spans the visible light spectrum (from ultraviolet to red) when exposed to light. Structure: Composed of an amorphous or crystalline carbon core featuring both sp² and sp³ hybridized carbons, often decorated with surface functional groups like hydroxyls (OH), carboxyls (COOH), and amines (NH₂).Biocompatibility: Unlike traditional heavy-metal semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanodots are environmentally benign and highly water-soluble, making them exceptionally safe for biological applications.
