GARDEN GROUND COVERS Plants specifically chosen to grow at ground level are called ground covers. They provide beneficial characteristics for the garden, and below, we've listed a few common ground covers and their uses. Clover works to attract beneficial insects; it enhances soil fertility, helps suppress weeds, and retains soil moisture because of its nitrogen-fixing ability. Buckwheat is a fast-growing cover crop that can improve soil structure and suppress weeds. Buckwheat is especially good for attracting pollinators when it flowers. Vetch is a leguminous cover crop that helps fix nitrogen in the soil, making it more fertile for subsequent vegetable crops. It also provides excellent weed control, but use with caution, it can be invasive! Mustard is known for its biofumigation properties; mustard can suppress soil-borne pests and diseases while adding organic matter to the soil. Lettuce or Spinach are leafy greens that can serve as an edible ground cover. They shade the soil, reducing weed growth, and can be harvested for food. Radish fast-growing varieties provide a food source, however, they also improve aeration and drainage, and their roots break up compacted soil. Sweet Potatoes, when grown as a ground cover, spread quickly, suppressing weeds while producing edible tubers. Thyme and Oregano are perennial herbs that can suppress weeds yet also provide culinary benefits. Ground covers can: • Enhance a garden's productivity by contributing to soil health. • Help prevent erosion. • Be helpful in no-till gardening systems. • Promote ecological balance by promoting biodiversity. I am skeptical that biofumigation is a major factor in controlling fungal pathogens because the dose is so low compared to commercial fumigants. However, there are other mechanisms at work, and the biofumigation is probably more of a factor for nematode control.

I had the pleasure of chairing the second session of the HAU PhD Colloquium! Starting things off strong was Francis Kawalya’s research on partial biofumigation for potato cyst nematode management
Kicking off the @HarperAdamsUni #PhD Colloquium is Cara Wharton, with a great presentation sharing her research into rapid rooting in lettuce. 🥬

#Mustard plants enrich #SoilHealth and fertility through #biofumigation. Their glucosinolates break down into biofumigants, suppressing soil-borne #pests and diseases, reducing the need for #chemicals. #seed @G7 Learn more about the #SaveSoil movement at: savesoil.org
Discover the double-duty dynamo of the soil world - the mighty mustard plant! Not only does it serve as a nutritious crop, but as it decomposes, its bioactive compounds act as a natural fumigant, enriching the soil it calls home. Mustard's role in improving our planet's health is as potent and promising as its flavor. #SaveSoil
