From July 2026, CBSE students in Classes 9 and 10 will have to study 3 languages as part of a major change under the new education policy.
According to the revised CBSE language scheme aligned with NEP 2020, students will study R1, R2, and R3, and at least 2 of these must be Indian languages.
Students who wish to study a foreign language can still do so, but only if the other two chosen languages are native Indian languages. Foreign languages may also be taken as an additional fourth language.
CBSE says the new structure follows the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 and is aimed at promoting multilingual learning among students.
