West Africa's digital economy is expanding rapidly, driven by advancements in ICT, artificial intelligence, and industrial automation. While this transformation fuels economic growth and innovation, it also contributes to rising greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. Data centres, digital devices, and industrial automation systems consume vast amounts of energy, often powered by fossil fuels, worsening the region’s carbon footprint and accelerating climate change. Despite the increasing global focus on sustainable digital infrastructure, developing economies like Nigeria still face gaps in comprehensive research and policy frameworks to mitigate these emerging environmental challenges. Yesterday, we had the privilege of presenting our findings and innovative solutions at the West African Internet Governance Forum 2025 on ‘Greening West Africa's Digital Future: Addressing Tech-Driven Emissions.’ Our Managing Partner at AREAi’s Center for Digital Development, Innovation, and Research (CDDIR), Omoniyi Lawson (@likebezalel), delivered the presentation. Exploring the intersection of digital transformation and environmental sustainability, he drew insights from our research on Technology-Led Greenhouse Gas Emissions (THGE) in Nigeria, with comparative perspectives from South Africa, Brazil, and India; highlighting critical lessons in policy implementation and adoptable sustainability strategies for West African nations. Yesterday, we had the privilege of participating in a one-day Youth Engagement on Digital and Environmental Sustainability for a Green Economy. Organized by the Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director of the Department of Climate, this event was held in collaboration with the European Union (@EUinNigeria ) and AREAi’s Center for Digital Development and Innovation Research (CDDIR). The forum brought together key stakeholders, partners, specialists, and passionate young people working strategically to promote digital sustainability for a greener future. Goodwill messages were shared by representatives from the Ministry of Youth Development; Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, The Presidency, the National Council on Climate Change, and CDDIR. On behalf of our Global Director, Prince Gideon Olanrewaju (@LanreShaper ), Omoniyi Lawson (@filiuslaw ), Managing Partner of CDDIR, emphasized the vital role young people play in driving sustainable change. The panel, breakout and pitch sessions were incredibly insightful.
