For Day 37, we are bypassing the roster math on this Memorial Day to honor a true American hero and Colorado State multi-sport legend. šŗšø
#1 Lewis "Dude" Dent (1939-1943) ā The 1943 Mountain States "Best All-Around Athlete" was a bruising All-Conference fullback, basketball starter, and track star at CSU from Craig, CO.
Dentās legacy at CSU went beyond his athletic dominance. CSU legend John Mosley later remembered Dent as a "great friend" who broke the color line and supported his teammate against the prejudice Mosley faced in the sport.
In 1943, Dent was drafted by the (NFL) Brooklyn Dodgers. Instead, and reportedly just four credits shy of his engineering degree at CSU, Dent answered the call to active duty during WWII.
Serving as an Army Second Lieutenant and forward artillery observer under General Patton's Third Army, he was killed in action by machine-gun fire on August 25, 1944, during the liberation of Troyes, France. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry.
