GOOD NEWS! Thanks to the efforts of @CalFTB, IRS #DirectFile will be fully integrated w/CalFile & PERMANENTLY AVAILABLE for CA taxpayers. This has the potential to deliver $2.25B in total value between saving in tax prep fees, time spent filing, and federal credits claimed.

I just used CalFile for the first time. Their robust fraud prevention safeguards were a bit annoying but once I got in, it was very straightforward. Didn't try using any of the help features though

As we approach the April 15th tax deadline, the IRS is providing resources to file for free. California has a new pilot program & residents can now use IRS Direct File to file federal taxes free online & may be eligible for the state's free CalFile.

yes, the state has offered a free online tax filing program called CalFile for many years. it's not quite as slick as the new IRS federal one but it gets the job done ftb.ca.gov/file/ways-to-fileā¦

the rent seekers won't be defeated until this program is expands beyond people with the most basic taxes imaginable. CalFile has been around for years and doesn't cover anyone with capital gains.
