Caves play an important role in groundwater as they're a part of the Earth's internal plumbing.
Karst aquifers, vital groundwater sources in the US, supply about 40% of the country's drinking water. They are characterized by distinct landforms like springs, caves, and sinkholes.
Karst aquifers are highly productive but also extremely vulnerable to contamination due to their unique hydrogeology.

Karst aquifers are highly productive but also extremely vulnerable to contamination due to their unique hydrogeology. Well-known karst areas in the US include Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Happy National Caves and Karst Day and International Cave Day (right in the middle of @NatlParkService's Caves Week 2024)!
#Kentucky is world-renowned for its karst. Karst is a landscape with sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, and springs. So when #KGS's Potter interns started developing their research projects in Red River Gorge, were they influenced by the area's beautiful scenery and unique environment? Of karst.
All 6 interns chose to pursue #geology research questions related to Kentucky karst:
- Does structural geology correlate to cave passage formation?
- How much water is stored long term in the karst system?
- Do we see changes in nutrients in the cave stream?
- Is there evidence of organic contamination in the aquifer?
- Do nutrients, water storage, contamination, and how the cave forms impact where salamanders are?
- Do nutrients, water storage, contamination, and how the cave forms impact cave biodiversity?
We're passing on the love of caves and karst to the next generation.
