Dr. Rashna Bhandari, Staff Scientist & Group Leader, Laboratory of Cell Signalling, @BRIC_CDFD, is advancing research on inositol pyrophosphates—high-energy signaling molecules that regulate cellular physiology and metabolism. Her work demonstrated that loss of IP6K1, the enzyme responsible for synthesizing 5-InsP7 (IP7), reduces granular accumulation of digestive enzymes in gastric cells, establishing a key role for inositol pyrophosphates in secretory function. She also identified a loss-of-function mutation in SERPINA11 that leads to a perinatal lethal serpinopathy, and her laboratory uncovered widespread endogenous protein pyrophosphorylation in mammalian cells, showing that InsP7-mediated pyrophosphorylation is essential for maintaining ribosomal RNA transcription.
