In early pregnancy, different parts of the face form and then join together in the middle. Most people have a little dip above their top lip where this happens.

A cleft happens when the different parts of the mouth donât come together all the way when a baby is growing in the womb. Surgery doesn't 'fix' a cleft - it might close the gap(s), but it doesnât erase a familyâs experiences or what might happen in the future.
