It’s Cleft Awareness Week. People born with cleft lip or palate can face lifelong oral health challenges. We’re proud to be collaborating with @CLAPACOMMUNITY on a free webinar supporting more inclusive, patient-centred dental care. #CleftAwarenessWeek

As my son became a teenager one of the hardest things as a parent was making sure his voice got heard during treatment as the tendency of a parent is to try and always guide the treatment. Another important #cleftawarenessweek post from @CLAPACOMMUNITY
This year for Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week, we asked our Children and Young People’s Council (CYPC) what they’d like others to understand about cleft. For many, growing up with a cleft can feel isolating, and we often hear that they can feel misunderstood. 1/2

Our son was also born with a cleft palate which although less visible can have implications for speech and hearing. This #cleftawarenessweek @CLAPACOMMUNITY are putting up posts with information on this and other cleft related matters
One of the most common mistakes we see is people saying ‘cleft palate’ when they mean ‘cleft lip’. But a cleft palate isn’t something you can see from the outside – not without taking a good look in someone’s mouth! [1/4]

It’s #CleftAwarenessWeek and this year is all about busting myths around cleft lip and palate. Since joining @CLAPACOMMUNITY earlier this year, I’ve learned just how misunderstood cleft can be — and how amazing the cleft community really is.

Today @CLAPACOMMUNITY are talking number of operations in #cleftawarenessweek and while our son didn’t have 20 operations there have been 6 spread out with the latest being last summer in his late teens
“Isn’t a cleft fixed when they’re a baby?” Some people born with a cleft will need over twenty operations in their life, it’s important to raise awareness that cleft isn’t always a simple ‘fix’. 💙 Learn more about supporting people affected by cleft: buff.ly/HF5XYyl

I don’t revisit it so much now but when my son was born with a cleft we did wonder how it happened which you don’t really know for sure. See below #cleftawarenessweek post on the causes of cleft by @CLAPACOMMUNITY
What causes a cleft? 💙 The causes of cleft are complicated and will be different for everyone, but it’s very unlikely to be because of something a child’s parents did or didn’t do. [1/4]

When my son was born over 16 years ago I knew nothing about cleft and @CLAPACOMMUNITY was one of the invaluable resources in helping us navigate what it was and what it meant - they are sharing lots of useful info this #cleftawarenessweek
What is a cleft? 💙 In early pregnancy, different parts of the face form and then join together in the middle. Most people have a little dip above their top lip where this happens. For one in every 700 babies, the different parts don’t join together all the way. [1/4]

Because we've just finished #CleftAwarenessWeek (@CLAPACOMMUNITY) and I want to share these cartoons by Andrew Fraser @cartoonsidrew. They beautifully articulate our experience of having (a wonderful!) child with a cleft, surgery, and all the anxieties and joys.

Todays @CLAPACOMMUNITY post talks about celebrating differences and I was reminded of a #cleftawarenessweek #comic I did on this topic a few years ago
Growing up with a cleft can mean you look and sound different from your peers and might have many experiences others can’t relate to. Being born with a cleft might make you different – but everyone is different! At CLAPA, we believe the world should celebrate these differences.

Todays @CLAPACOMMUNITY #cleftawarenessweek hits hard because we parents you want to be able to say your sons cleft will be all sorted before they progress into adulthood

A cleft happens when the different parts of the mouth don’t come together all the way when a baby is growing in the womb. Surgery doesn't 'fix' a cleft - it might close the gap(s), but it doesn’t erase a family’s experiences or what might happen in the future.

A brilliant post and a reminder to all health care professionals to look at palates with a touch and tongue depressor - a look and a feel just don’t work and leads to a missed diagnosis #cleftawarenessweek
Today like @CLAPACOMMUNITY were talking about cleft palate which is less visible than cleft lip. My son was also born with a cleft palate which was noticed at birth, but it is sometimes harder to diagnose if no cleft lip
