Quick, reconciling. And behind the curtains let them strike a deal if they want.

Both are quotes of Matt, he wanted to go "scorched earth" and "nuclear" only to now say everyone's smearing him... He's doing all the damage here (even worse that damage is to himself and his legacy). So yes - all of this is wrong on all accounts. And it's all by Matt's hand.

Many automatticians have families, and the choice to leave isn't easy, especially without something already lined up. Most of A8c's employees are not "post-economic."

I understand the legacy nature of WordPress being a difficult and rather large ship to steer with regards to considering a move towards a PSR compliant architecture. I hope the community pushes for these sorts of features so they don't feel like their site can be held hostage.

Moreover, why does the WordPress community rely on this free yet dictatorially governed ecosystem of its own design rather than democratizing it over the standard vendor management layer, Composer? The answer is, so Matt can do this as he sees fit. He's 100% a control freak.

WPE hosts sites running WordPress. At what point do you shift the blame for utilizing the WP ecosystem as it's been designed, away from each site owner and onto the host running the site? If the answer is "depends on revenue" you're already on the wrong side of the line.

Some people’s take on this matter is so absurd I can’t help but wonder if they’re being paid by WPE.

WPE has so few commits to WordPress repo they aren’t visible when you graph them. In short, the community is largely suffering from main character syndrome here and most will see no impact from this situation. WP Engine is playing the victim is nothing short of gaslighting.

It’s absurd to think they’re entitled to utilize community infrastructure while making no material contribution to pay for said infrastructure. All of the “contributions” they claim are for things that directly benefit WP Engine.

This can be tenable for low volume use, but when folks start building a business of moderate scale on top of free community infrastructure it can become a problem. Frankly whether you agree with Matt or not, WP engine is operating from a standpoint of learned helplessness.

Yeah I understand; they’re still leveraging a trademark they don’t own as a major element in their funnel. If this wasn’t the case they could simply fork. I’ve been in a similar situation (past employer) where we ran free services for the community at great expensive to us.

They aren't selling WordPress, they're selling hosting and a proprietary management layer.

How has that happened? Anyone can still download and run WordPress. This is not a tragedy of the commons, it’s a private for-profit enterprise being unwilling to license the trademark for the product they sell.

Disabling revisions is a core WP feature and Automattic is even more VC backed than WP Engine
