The Boat Squadron’s Shift from Defensive to Offensive Ops In May 1977, soon after the establishment of Op Splinter, President Kaunda announced that Zambia was in a ‘state of war with Rhodesia’. Rhodesia replied that it had ‘no aggressive intentions’, but Ian Smith sent a note to British Foreign Secretary, David Owen, with regard to the ZIPRA build-up in Zambia, stating that ‘if attacks should develop, then in the interests of security, Rhodesia will have no option but to conduct pre-emptive strikes.’ In the two weeks following that note to Dr Owen, there were attacks from Zambia on Victoria Falls, Kazungula and Kariba. On 23 January 1978, Kariba Township was subjected to its sixth rocket and mortar attack from Zambia in eight months. As in previous attacks, the army returned fire with an Eland armoured car based on Kariba Heights. The Russian-made rocket launcher was reportedly hit by the Eland’s second shell and eliminated. There were no casualties on the Rhodesian side and damage was minimal. However, the Rhodesians had had enough and on Kariba, the Boat Squadron was given the green light to go on the offensive. Although the BSAP and the Police Reserve boats remained restricted to Rhodesian waters, the Engineers Boat Squadron unofficially declared the entire lake Rhodesian territory, at least at night. Additionally, permission was granted for the Boat Squadron to carry out jitter patrols along the Zambian shoreline and into Zambian harbours, with the aim of stamping Rhodesian authority on the lake and forcing the Zambians to recognise that there would be consequences to Kaunda’s ‘declaration of war’. This also forced the Zambian Army to deploy troops along the entire lake, with the associated costs and thinning of their defences near the dam wall. Remarkable latitude was given to the Boat Squadron to carry out these activities. No permission above the Binga Sub-JOC Engineer officer in Binga was required for most activities along the Zambian shore. Any planned harbour attacks required only a coded advisory message to the OC 2 Indep, back in Kariba. This made the Boat Squadron one of just a few Rhodesian units that were authorized to operate over Rhodesia’s borders without specific clearance from COMOPS. Some of the Boat Squadron’s jitter patrols consisted of simply moving in close to the Zambian shoreline and firing a burst of tracer from a machine gun to try to draw Zambian or ZIPRA fire. We had orders to avoid hitting any civilians, or Zambian Army personnel. Harbour attacks were more involved. Boat availability was at a premium and the patrols usually consisted of single or, at the most, two 24-foot strike craft. Before the introduction of radar to the 24-foot strike craft, one of the radar-equipped mother ships would sometimes park itself on the border, opposite the harbour to be revved. This would guide the strike craft into their target as accurately as possible, but also enable them to watch their back, in case of any interference by Zambian boats. The Boat Squadron experimented with firing 60mm mortars from the 24ft strike craft, as part of the jitter patrols. A mortar tube was set up on a bed of sandbags on the floor of the boat. The technique was to gently beach the craft to add stability, and then fire three or four mortar rounds before withdrawing. But even with the bow pushed onto the sand, this proved to be too unstable for accurate fire. The procedure was later modified, setting up the mortar on solid ground, with the two MAGs dismounted and acting as outlying protection from the nearby bush. The mortaring did occasionally draw some RPD and AK return fire, but the enemy fire was generally coming from several hundred metres away, and the rounds usually passed well overhead of the boats. But the enemy firing positions were noted. The value of these jitter patrols is perhaps questionable. They did cause consternation for the Zambians and drive home the message that they couldn’t engage in cross-border attacks on Rhodesian targets, or enable ZIPRA to do so, without paying a cost. The frequency of attacks on Kariba Township from Zambia certainly did reduce for a while after their initiation. However, the increased alertness of the Zambian troops along the lake, caused by the jitter patrols, may have made the job more difficult for SAS teams operating in Zambia, although they never voiced concerns. The man in this story is Robert Levine. He runs a company called ComOps that charges businesses money to teach them how to use AI. This is literally his profession. Also the home did not sell for $1 million. It sold for $954,800. And ChatGPT did not sell anything. It gave him a checklist. He painted the rooms himself. He hosted the open house himself. He hired a real lawyer to handle the actual legal documents. What AI did was replace the part where you pay a realtor $30,000 to send emails and make a Zillow listing. That part, yes, is genuinely useful and worth knowing. But the story being sold to you is “random guy uses free tool, gets rich.” The actual story is “AI consultant runs professional experiment, gets featured in Fortune magazine.” lol 😂

On 23 March 2026, let us pause for a minute to remember the following young men from our Generation who answered the Final Roll Call. 23 Mar 1965: Two SAAF members, one from 7 Squadron and one from 8 Squadron were killed when their AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7473 crashed near Bloemfontein during a night cross-country exercise. It appears that the crew may have become disorientated as the wreck indicated that the aircraft flew vertically into the ground while still under full power. The crew were: PX/50483 2/Lieutenant (Pilot Instructor) Jacobus Johannes le Roux from 8 Squadron. He was 22. 6001910 Candidate Officer (Pupil Pilot) Robin Leslie Jarmain from 7 Squadron. He was 21. 23 Mar 1965: 6315406 Gunner Leonard Edward Parsons from Eastern Province Command was accidentally electrocuted. He was 18. 23 Mar 1979: Two members, one from Infantry School and the other from 1 Maintenance Unit were killed in a private motor vehicle accident on the Potchefstroom to Johannesburg road while on Leave Pass. The casualties were: 74241993BG Rifleman Joseph Jacobus Marthinus Wentzel from Infantry School. He was 19. 77432490BG Private Jacobus Frederick Pieter van der Poel from 1 Maintenance Unit. He was 17. 23 Mar 1980: 71260731BT Corporal Renier Stephanus van Zyl from Regiment Namutoni SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 24. 23 Mar 1980: 77659804 BG Rifleman Robert Frederick McShane from the Army Gymnasium in Heidelberg was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident just outside Hoopstad on 18 November 1979 while hitch-hiking home to Cape Town on a weekend pass. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 23 March 1980. He was 19. 23 Mar 1982: 79820684SP Rifleman Johannes Dimbo from 201 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action after suffering multiple shrapnel wounds from a Soviet 60mm mortar bomb explosion during a SWAPO/PLAN insurgent attack near Nkongo. He was 22. 23 Mar 1985: 76433721BG 2/Lieutenant Delarey Matthee from 3 SAI was accidentally shot and killed by own forces in his own ambush at Kamanjab. He was tasked to carry out COMOPS patrols in the Kamanjab area and had clearly instructed his troops to shoot in their weapons as they would be setting up an ambush that night. He also ordered his troops to shoot anyone walking into their ambush position. The platoon set up the ambush position and 2/Lt Matthee, accompanied by Lance Corporal Trollip and an interpreter moved out of the ambush position to do a reconnaissance of a nearby kraal. When they got close to the kraal, he instructed Lance Corporal Trollip to return to the ambush position as his blond hair may have given away their position. Finding nothing suspect at the kraal, 2/Lt Matthee and the interpreter moved off to another kraal some distance away before returning to the ambush position. In total darkness, they entered the ambush position from the opposite side from where they left thus walking directly into the killing zone. 2/Lt Matthee was walking in front carrying his R4 rifle that was fitted with the long 50-round magazine. The MAG machine-gunner and his No 2 on guard duty mistook the weapon for an AK-47 and immediately opened fire. 2/Lt Matthee was riddled with bullets and died instantly. He was 24. The interpreter, only lightly wounded, managed to take cover and identify himself. 23 Mar 1988: W410355M Constable Jacobus Ignatius van Zyl from the SWA Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action when his Zulu 4 Sierra (Z4S) Casspir was hit by a Soviet RPG-7 Anti-Tank Rocket during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 22. 23 March 1990: 65796633PE Commandant Henry Walter Venter from 4 Vehicle Reserve Park was killed in a military vehicle accident on the Old Warmbaths Road near Pretoria. He was 40. 22 to 24 Mar 2013: Thirteen members from 1 Parachute Battalion were Killed in Action during the Battle of Bangui, Central African Republic when 200 South African Soldiers successfully defended their base against an attacking Rebel Enemy Force numbering approximately 3 000 troops and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy force in the process. The Battle raged from Friday 22 March 2013 until Sunday 24 March 2013. The casualties were: Corporal Mokgadi Darius Seakamela. Corporal Ntebaleng Andrew Mogorosi. Lance Corporal Daniel Sello Molara. Lance Corporal Lukas Mohapi Tsheke. Rifleman Lesego Maxwell Hertzog. Rifleman Zamani Jim Mxhosana. Rifleman Xolani Dlamini. Rifleman Vusumzi Joseph Ngaleka. Rifleman Karabo Edwin Matsheka. Rifleman Khomotso Paul Msenga. Rifleman Maleisane Samuel Thulo. Rifleman Motsamai William Bojane. Rifleman Thabiso Anthon Phirimana. Their names and sacrifice have not been forgotten.
