W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 On our final #thankfulthursday reflection of our anniversary year, we are grateful for the beauty of community, as demonstrated by the many hands and hearts that worked together to illuminate the 63rd Annual Waimea Twilight Christmas Parade. Our staff, along with @cfhtelescope, had the privilege of ‘imagineering’ Santa’s float. It included a canoe in honor of the parade theme “E Lauhoe Mai Na Wa’a” - Everyone Paddle the Canoe Together. Mahalo nui to the Kawaihae Canoe Club for letting us feature your beautiful waʻa as part of Santa’s sleigh, and to the Waimea Community Association for bringing together keiki to kupuna year after year for this time-honored community tradition! 👉 waimeatown.org/parade 📸 Derek P., Gavin S., and Joan C. and others. #keck30 #scienceanniversary #keckobservatory #hawaiiastronomy #communityiswhy

W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫Happy Thanksgiving! A meal can feel even more nourishing when surrounded by those we care about. This #ThankfulThursday we appreciate those who provide free meals for the community, such as St. James Episcopal Church. Recently, our Keck Observatory software team along with Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope @CFHTelescope, sponsored one of their weekly Thursday meals and volunteered to prep and serve dinner. Today, the church is hosting a special Thanksgiving lunch from 11 am to 1 pm in their Pavilion. Want to join St. James for a community meal or volunteer? W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 Maunakea is revered not only for its stature and beauty, but also because it is home to many endemic flora and fauna important to the ecosystem of the entire island. This #thankfulthrusday, we are grateful for the Mālama Maunakea Volunteer Weed Pulls. @malamamaunakea. The Center for Maunakea Stewardship program helps control fireweed and other invasive plants around Maunakea’s 9,000' elevation to reduce and prevent them from spreading to higher elevations. It also prepares the land for native plant restoration projects. Keckie Liz Chock, software engineer, is among the many volunteers who have participated in the community weed pulls, which are open to the public. Want to volunteer? W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫The future of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) is in the hands of our keiki. This #thankfulthursday, we highlight important programs that spark excitement for STEAM, such as the Hawaiʻi Science & Technology Museum. Keckie Kekoa Alip, Community Relations Coordinator, engaged with nearly 400 students from Naʻalehu Elementary at the grand opening of Honuworks, the Museum’s robotics & technology center serving the Naʻalehu community. HSTM aims to inspire genuine interest in STEAM through science camps, math tutoring, after school programs, student research support, and robotics competitions. W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 On this #thankfulthursday, we are grateful for how communities have come together to help us all become more fire wise, especially in light of the devastating wildfires on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island. The Waimea Resilience Hub is among those helping to prepare residents for when disaster strikes, starting with awareness via the Waimea Fire Prevention and Resilience Fair the Hub held in September. Keckie Max Davis, our Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator, participated in the event and has since volunteered to chair the Waimea Resilience Hub and share his safety expertise with the community. Mahalo to all members of the Hub for all you do! Learn more 👉 waimeahub.org #keck30 #scienceanniversary #keckobservatory #hawaiiastronomy #communityiswhy

W. M. Keck Observatory’s 30th Science Anniversary 📷 We continue our #thankfulthursday series with gratitude for those who strive to create education-to-workforce pipelines for local students seeking STEM careers, such as the University of Hawaiʻi College of Engineering, which regularly holds career expos for their students. Keckie Zoe Wilson had the opportunity to join Maunakea Observatories colleagues at the last expo, connecting with brilliant young minds about engineering opportunities available in Hawaiʻi’s astronomy field. W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 On this #thankfulthursday, we are grateful for the community connections made through educational opportunities where we can share our passion for astronomy with keiki and keiki at heart, such as at this past weekend's Astro Day at Kona Commons. The outdoor event featured 20 stations that had fun, interactive science activities and exhibits. Keckies Adolfo Carvalho, Max Brodheim, Kekoa Alip, and Avinash Surendran had a blast showing the community safe views of solar flares emitting from the Sun through a solar telescope, demonstrating how our Keck I and Keck II telescopes work, as well sharing information about Project PANOPTES, a citizen science project that makes it easy for anyone to build a low-cost, robotic telescope that can detect transiting exoplanets. The highlight? Meeting the Mandalorian! Mahalo to @UHIfA Hilo for spearheading Astro Day on Hawaiʻi Island every year. Want to learn more? W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 Water is life. We continue our #thankfulthursday series with a community shoutout to those who answer the call of the ocean to keep it pristine, such as the @OceanDefenders Big Island Chapter. Keckies Jacques Delorme, adaptive optics scientist, and Erin Clement, electronics engineer, are among the volunteer divers who regularly remove debris from Hawaiʻi's waters. On one of their recent dives, the group pulled a massive fishing net off of precious reef at Keahole Point, plus 1800 feet of fishing line! W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 Astronomy shows us how truly special our planet is; more than 5,000 planets beyond our solar system have been discovered but none are like Earth. On this #thankfulthursday, we mahalo everyone in the community who strives to keep our home planet's ecosystem healthy, including Earth's creatures. One such organization is @TMMC, which protects the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. Keckie Eduardo Marin, project engineer/manager, is among the volunteers who help with their convservation efforts. W. M. Keck Observatory's 30th Science Anniversary 💫 Mahalo, community, for three decades of support! Among the ways we strive to give back is to help share knowledge the universe reveals to us. Our #thankfulthursday series continues with a spotlight on one such effort: @ohanakilohoku’s 'Ohana Stargazing at Moʻokini Heiau in North Kohala, where the community experiences Hawaiʻi's rich, cultural traditions, stories, and knowledge while using telescopes to view the stars. Keckie electronics engineer Michael Dayawan is among those who volunteered to offer telescope viewing at the summer stargazing event.
