Two years ago, my wife and I moved from Washington State to Florida. A large part of the reason we moved is that we wanted to get away from the leftist west coast and into an area with a large number of other conservative Christians. We wound up buying near the southern end of Tampa Bay.
The eyewall of this last hurricane passed over my house.
During the two days before the hurricane hit (and especially after it reached Cat 5), my entire neighborhood was making preparations with a real urgency.
You'd expect people to be terse and looking out for themselves in that situation. But, what I saw was some of the most selfless sharing of tools and supplies and a nearly limitless amount of willing labor ready to swarm any house that needed shutters put up or sandbags placed.
In fact, a man a few houses down came and rang my doorbell to offer me his extension ladder IN CASE I needed it for second-story shutters. I had never met him before.
Two days ago, a guy posted on the neighborhood's Facebook page that he was GIVING away 10 gallons of gas to anyone who "really needed it". Gas hasn't been easy to find.
After this last week, I can honestly say I would rather suffer 3 hurricanes a year and live with these neighbors than never suffer another natural disaster and be forced to live in a blue state.
God Bless Florida and the USA!
