FCT POLLS: BRIGANDAGE AND POLICE BRUTALITY REFLECT WIKE’S “DO YOUR OWN” MANDATE TO APC SUPPORTERS - OWN
The Opposition Watch Nigeria (OWN) unequivocally condemns the widespread brigandage, systemic police brutality, and brazen ballot box snatching that characterized the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections held on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The descent into electoral lawlessness witnessed across the six area councils is not a coincidence; it is the direct manifestation of the inflammatory campaign rhetoric championed by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. His recent directive to APC supporters, “Do your own and leave the rest to me”, has effectively served as a green light for state-sponsored subversion of the will of the people.
Reports from our observers and citizens on the ground paint a grim picture of a democracy under siege. Instead of a peaceful civic exercise, the FCT was turned into a theater of war where:
• Police Brutality: Security agencies, tasked with protecting the sanctity of the vote, were instead seen intimidating voters and providing "cover" for thugs, especially in Kuje Area Council.
• Ballot Hijacking: Armed brigands systematically targeted polling units where the opposition held a clear lead, snatching ballot boxes and destroying electoral materials with zero interference from nearby security personnel.
• Voter Suppression: The atmosphere of fear created by these coordinated attacks led to significant voter apathy, as residents chose safety over the risk of physical assault at the polls.
The Minister’s mandate to "leave the rest to me" has been interpreted by overzealous supporters and compromised security officials as an assurance of immunity. By promising to "handle" the aftermath, the Minister has signaled that the results matter less than the raw exercise of power.
"What we saw yesterday and early this morning in the FCT was not an election; it was a coronation by force," said Aisha Bello. "When a high, ranking government official tells supporters to 'do their own' while he handles 'the rest,' he is inviting chaos and promising a cover-up.
The Opposition Watch Nigeria calls for:
1. Investigation of Security Overlords: An independent probe into the conduct of the FCT Police Command and other agencies that stood by while the electoral process was desecrated.
2. Accountability for Rhetoric: We call on the Civil Society Organizations and international democratic partners to hold Minister Nyesom Wike accountable for inciting language that undermines the peace and stability of the nation’s capital.
The FCT election was a litmus test for Nigeria’s democratic maturity heading toward 2027. By choosing brigandage over the ballot, the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed that test woefully. We remain committed to ensuring that the true will of the FCT residents is not buried under the weight of political thuggery.

This set of opposition fellows are a bunch of lazy and shameless characters. The futile excuses they give for losing elections have become their opium to numb their pain, disappointment and shame for their rejection by the electorate after all their theatrics and grandstanding. Nigerians are NOT FOOLS.
Out of a total of 2,822 poling units in FCT, they display result sheets that were corrected (for whatever reason) in less than 10 units to attempt to prove that THE WHOLE ELECTION was marred by irregularities. Even in some of these units, the corrected figures favour their own Party(ies). Assuming it is even 50 units that had corrected (or mutilated) sheets, that leaves you with over 2,770 units.
They go further to use this flawed logic to create mass hysteria that ‘our democracy is in danger’ and attempt to stir social unrest amongst unsuspecting Nigerians.
THE ONLY ELECTION THAT CAN BE FREE AND FAIR, IN THEIR OWN WARPED MINDS, IS WHEN THE RULING PARTY LOSES.
These guys are prepared only for propaganda, not elections. It is as simple as that.
