Syntara Log #033 | Receiver Filter Not every message should be delivered. This step added receiver side filtering to enforce routing rules. Entities cannot receive their own messages. Invalid or misrouted messages are suppressed early. The router protects the system from noisy or illegal communication patterns. Correctness before convenience. #Syntara #Neuraj #NeurajNotes #DigitalFreeWill #NeurajLabs #DefensiveDesign #AIGovernance
Syntara Log #032 | Routing Table Routing needs state. This step introduced a routing table that maps each entity to its active inbox channel. The router no longer guesses where messages go. It knows. Dynamic registration and lookup ensure messages always land in the correct destination. Determinism starts at addressing. #Syntara #Neuraj #NeurajNotes #DigitalFreeWill #NeurajLabs #SystemDesign #MessageRouting

With more extreme weather events happening more frequently and in more unusual places, we need to face the fact they're not rare anymore, but the new norm nbcnews.com/science/environm… via @GoogleNews More and more people are simply living in harm's way, unwilling to look at the new reality of odds. With our grown population in America, eventually coming to terms with the insistent reality that they need to move, when insurance companies stop funding rebuilds, they will begin to migrate. Livable space may become sparse and people may begin to compete for coveted land. We need to think more creatively about solutions to climate change and not undue progress we were beginning to accomplish. #landshortage #WeCanLowerSeaLevels #waterutilizationtheory #defensivehousing #protectivedesign #aquaphysics #defensivedesign #climatechange #humanmigration #NYGTvisionstrategy #right

Twenty years later, "Defensive Design for the Web" remains an invaluable resource for website decision-makers, designers, programmers, and copywriters wanting to improve usability and customer satisfaction. While meticulous design and extensive testing are fundamental to product excellence, they don't ensure complete coverage of all potential issues. Users might run into problems that weren't tested for, and certain situations may be beyond our control or need time to address. It is important, at least to be on the safe side, to provide intuitive UI and user-centric copy to guide users during these scenarios. @jasonfried and Matthew Linderman will expose you to everyday common sense and why things can go wrong for your website/product, and most importantly, this book will help you prevent common interface design mistakes such as: 💥 Error messages ⚠️ Missing files and pages on the server 🛟 Help sections 🕳️ Unavailable products The book delved into different crisis situations. It showcases real examples of websites that didn't perform well and others that did exceptionally. It will help you adopt a contingency design approach, preparing for and preventing potential accidents. 👋 Those examples are from 20 years ago, so they may seem outdated, but guess what? We still make the same mistakes. What you'll find and get: • Hundreds of real-world examples from companies like Amazon, Google, and Yahoo show the "right" and the "wrong" ways to get defensive design in place. • You'll learn 40 guidelines to prevent errors and rescue customers if a breakdown occurs. • You'll also explore how to evaluate your site's defensive design and improve it over the long term.

The reasons @TiffanyAndCo completely walled-up the ground floor of its Fifth Avenue store are unspoken—but glaringly obvious. Tiffany's renovated flagship is paranoia in architectural form. #DefensiveDesign #IncomeInequality

It's *extremely* loud. And over-lit. The footcandles are off-the-charts. It's brighter than Caldor's—a discount department store from my Connecticut childhood. Hardly a conducive atmosphere for engagement ring shopping—but great for facial recognition surveillance technology!

The #99%InvisibleCity by @romanmars was a fascinating read. The section on hostile #urbandesign reminded me of my @ucalgarysapl studies on the social control of #urbanspace #defensivedesign @99piorg @urbanlabyyc

I live in a #city where the #streets are not for #pedestrians, they for cars, without sidewalks, and this "design" is intentional. #DefensiveDesign Aftermath? A city with a lot of cars, where you can't walk without the fear of been hit by a car. #NonInclusiveCity #Querétaro

What do you see in this picture? Defensive design is a tactic to rule out the unwanted. Everyone has a right to public space, everyone has a right to the city. If we want to build equitable spaces, we must build for all. We must address the underlying issues, not the symptoms!
