Along the northern edge of China's seventh-largest desert, the Kubuqi, a "Solar Great Wall" made of blue photovoltaic panels is rising. What was once a "sea of death" with yellow skies and no birds is now generating clean energy above while greening the land below.
Planned to stretch approximately 400 kilometers in length with an average width of five kilometers, the project has already installed over 10 gigawatts of solar capacity and restored 700,000 mu of desert land. The PV panels reduce sunlight exposure and wind speed while lowering water evaporation, creating viable conditions for drought-tolerant plants like salix and caragana. Water from nearby coal mines is diverted for drip irrigation, turning waste into a resource.
Once fully completed, the project is expected to generate about 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 16 million tons. More importantly, it forms an ecological barrier along the northern edge of the Kubuqi Desert, south of the Yellow River, preventing sand from invading the mother river.
The initiative is also bringing tangible benefits to local communities, from high-standard farmland to rural tourism and increased household income. In 2024, Ordos shared its "solar desert control" model with the world at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
A win-win for ecology and the economy is taking root in what was once a "sea of death."
