The educators who rightfully advocate for need to change content in schools – the #DisruptTexts community – rarely advocate for a change in pedagogy (how kids are taught... the leveled reading issue above).
The debate is reduced to book selection. It should be about teaching.

#distrupttexts has challenged me to deliberately introduce opposing perspectives and invite my learners to be critical of the canon. I feel this lays the foundation for beginning some uncomfortable conversations.

There was not one “classic’ that I “read” in high school that I actually liked/understood. This avid reader bought the cliff notes for most of the books. Reading the classics was an assignment to get through..not something to be enjoyed.

I’ve clearly said that the intention of #DistruptTexts is to expand the range of books considered to be “classic.” I’ve stated my support for this. Yet despite that admirable vision, some educators are proudly - even pridefully - purging books. Read journalist @MeghanGurdon. TY!

I think the author here is forgetting to ask an important question...who decided which books are classics?
Why, in my schooling, did I only study plays by white male authors?
Why, in my Canadian upbringing, did I never read a novel by an Indigenous person.
